Don't cut or increase watts.Check it out first as you may want to turn down wattage. Cutting or clipping a radio is not good . over modulation could cause a problem not only with the radio but with those you talk with. You will be slashing your modulation waves over the whole band any if it interfears with them they won't be happy. you can get all the information you want on www.cbtricks.com

Hi,

Appreciate the direct "Ask Me" again.

The initial posting would still hold true, best would be:

  • remove TR18;
  • replace 2SC2069 with 2SC1969; and
  • adjust L12, 13 & 14.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

SOURCE: cobra ltd classic no modulation

Assuming that you've tried another mike, the problem may lie in the speech amplifier circuit within the radio, something that will require someone with technical knowledge to repair.

SOURCE: cb problem have a cobra 19dx iv with a 2ft magnet

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Which output is muffled, transmit (modulation audio) or receive audio?

If you are referring to the receive audio, initially, have you tried an external speaker? If it works good, then it would be an internal speaker problem; if not then others to check would be:

  • IC1 - KIA7217AP audio IC;
  • CM 10 & 15 - audio output capacitors 470uF / 16V.
if it were transmit / modulation audio, try replacing the mic.

Please postback updates.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

How do I adjust modulation on cobra 25 wx nw st?

The Modulation adjustment is VR5, or you can cut D9, though I do not recommend completely disabling the AMC circuit. If VR5 does not have enough range, lift the banded end of D9 & solder a 1K-ohm resistor in series with the diode, then adjust for 100% modulation or to where the AMC circuit just starts to limit modulation.

cost of finals plus S&H plus labor. cheaper to buy a new one and have that one for parts. H&Y electronics has them but you have to call them to make sure they do.

Cobra 19dx iv when i key up it swings all the way to a 9 is there any way to set swr,s without a meter

Just buy a factory built antenna/(it should be close) Buy you a magnet mount RADIO SHACK job(works). If your indoors buy ANTRON A99(set at 1.3 SWR factory). If it keys 9 db then that equals 4 watts output thats OK.

Can a 19 ultra power be turned down to 1 watt? If so where?

Yes it can, but it requires the addition of some components. It isn't really a straight forward install. It needs some reworking. In my opinion, not worth the trouble.

Sounds like you want to run a linear amplifier. If you really want to run an amp, get a better radio to do it. There really is no other reason to lower the dead key that low. Also, 1 watt might be too low. May not drive the amp well.

If you just want to make the radio swing, 1 watt is way way too low. You will have barely any carrier and the radio will sound like ****. That radio stock dead keys 2.5 watts. That's perfect for swing. Now you just need to have more modulation. Find DM1 and unsolder 1 leg and pull it out of the board. Now you will have full modulation. You will deadkey 2.5 and swing to about 15 watts.

If you want to run an amp, get a good radio. If you like cobra, get a cobra 29. They are fairly cheap, and sound amazing. As well it is real easy to lower the dead key in that radio.

In most cases just turning up VR4 is more then enough. Replacing the final, tr14 with another transistor requires changing many more parts to get it to work.

With a new 29, there is no need to change the final. Just turn vr4 all the way up and you will see around 20 - 25 watts. L13 won't gain you a single watt. L12 will raise the dead key, and usually you want a lower dead key for good swing. L14 will gain you a few watts, but don't adjust this unless you have a watt meter. You turn it out to increase wattage, but too much will over bias the final and shorten its life.

You hook it to a watt meter with a dummy load. Then say a steady AHHHH into the mic while keyed. Turn the slug out until the needle stops going up, then back it down to where it stopped.

The easy thing to do, and you will be pleased is just to turn VR4 up. Now, Up is counter clockwise. Its a variable resistor, so the less resistance, the more modulation. So you want to turn the VR down.

that will be more then enough.

Question about my cobra 200

no need to increase power output. you can take a radio with 100 watts and a radio with 10 watts that had had a modulation kit installed and the 10 watt radio will out talk the 100 watt radio ALL day long. the best thing to do would to put a mod kit in it and have the dead key cut back to 1/2 watt then put as little amp behind it. with those mods it will be loud and clear. hope that helps
