Question about KitchenAid K45SS Classic Stand Mixer
The metal cap that is removed for the grinder & pasta attachment was not secured with the pin and fell into the bowl while while mixing cookie dough. Unfortunately this lodged the beater bar, everything "locked up". No rotating movement only a fast higher pitched clicking type sound. Definite damage done...is this repair worthy? The Heavy Duty mixer series is only 5 years old.
This is an excellent mixer and worthy of a professional or DIY repair.. You stripped a gear inside the mixer that is there just for that reason. Now the machine requires a tear down and replacement part. if you can post the model number we can advise on how to do it. If it is the new pro series model they cost between 4 and 5 hundred new to buy, the repair is going to cost between 80 and 100 dollars by a professional or about 30 dollars by you.

you most likely stripped the plastic gear (Worm gear???). This gear is designed to fail to prevent the motor from burning out under EXTREME loads (i.e. when a metal piece falls into the bowl). The plastic gear is much cheaper than a new motor. Look around on this site to see how to get at/repair the gear. I've found many parts on eBay.com and also PartSelect.com.

SOURCE: mixer head loose
Referring to the diagram on:
Remove the screw, item 22, to remove the trim band around the mixer. This will reveal 4 screws which hold the top cover on. Remove the screws and lift the top off. Find all the screws which hold the gearhead in place and tighten them all. If you want to make the fix a permanent one put some thread-loc compound on each screw and tighten it.

Turn the mixer over and look up where the pin goes through the two pieces. There is a screw there which secures the pin. Tap the pin into position and tighten the screw.
