Test all power and data leads that attach to your hard drive IDE,SATA
the leads from your MOTHERBOARD TO THE HARD DRIVE make sure they have a secure dust free connections and are not faulty or just replace them they could be faulty if its a flat 40pin ide this will be the first to fail Make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd and floppy (If Applicable) have secure connections and are not faulty.
Restart your computer During the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup usually the Delete or the F2 key but will differ depending on your computer and Bios. Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS then using the arrow keys navigate to advanced bios features press enter change your first boot device to cd press escape then press f10 to save to cmos restart this will erase you operating system you will have to have an operating system disk to load it onto you hard drive or create a partition to load another operating system. Note: After you have loaded the operating system you should go back and change the first boot device to failsafe or optimised defaults after windows has loaded If you are putting windows XP on your computer your computer will automatically restart it might restart 2 times one to finish the installation the next will be because the operating system is loaded and will boot from your cd\dvd. Hope this helps.

the computer installs the driver to X: drive which is a virutal drive. The moment a restart is required everything in a virtuial drive gets wiped and you simply go in a circle. I can get to a dos prompt and control the drive, format etc manually but windows vista says it can't detect the working drive, the bios does not allow for any changes in the drive either.

Computer doesn't recognize internal drive installing vista

Drive 0 means that it is the first (or only) drive plugged in. You should use a partition manager to format the hard drive to give it a partition. After you have a partition made (NTFS format) it should show up!

Erase hard drive before returning computer?

If you mean wiping out all the data and operating system then -
This is generally howyour format the hard disk and install Windows.
First you need a Windows XP or Windows Vista installation CD and the productinstallation code, which is printed on the Windows label on the bottom of yourlaptop.
Boot up with the Windows installation CD start and follow the instructions toinstall Windows.
Next Delete the existing Windows partition.
Next Create a new partition.
Next format this new partition - Format the partition in NTFS not a quickformat. This will prepare the Windows for a clean install.
If you do not wish to continue installing Windows then Exit and shut down the computer.

Can you please give me step by step insturctions on how to totally wipe my hardrive on my dell latitude 600? Then I will refoat it back to its orignal settings. thank You

Unless you're donating the drive, there's no need to do anything before re-installing the OS. When Windows asks where you want to install the OS to, you'll see an option for formatting the drive first.
If you are donating it and are worried about someone recovering the data (after formatting and re-installing, it's not something the average tech can do) I'd recommend booting the laptop off CD/USB drive with this image (http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/) and running one of the Hard Disk Wiping utilities. Mind you, some of the very thorough ones (military-grade) can take DAYS.

Administrator password Dell Inspiron 1720

If the system is asking for an administrator password in Windows and you are wanting to format and reinstall the system, then the password shouldn't be an issue. Most inspiron systems are equipped with a PC Restore partition CTRL+F11 just after the Dell Splash Screen should enable the restore process. If PC Restore doesn't work, then boot to the XP CD and format the NTFS partition and install Windows XP clean. If you have Windows Vista, the PC Restore is run from the F8 Boot menu. If no restore partition is accessible in Vista, then again Boot to the Vista DVD and format the NTFS partition and install VIsta.

I need to completely format my pc but can't remeber how. System restore not available this time.

If you want to completely erase all data on your hard drive, and start with a fresh installation of Windows, the process is pretty simple. Boot to you Windows Media Disc, delete the existing Windows Partition (Normally the 1st NTFS partition) then create a new NTFS partition, format it, then install WIndows to that partition. After the Windows installation completes, then install the drivers (Normally in this order:)
Desktop system Software (Dell Specific)
Chipset
Video
Audio
Modem
Network
Wireless (If Equipped)
Touchpad (If Equipped)
Card reader (If Equipped)

Win xp will start to install choose to delete the partition, confirm delete.

then press enter to install to that unallocated partition, choose format to NTFS.

Follow the prompts and it has formated the hard drive and will install XP.
