1 Answer

My daughters 350d will only take pictures in manual focus mode, in auto focus it all seems good but it won't actually take the picture? Any ideas?

I forgot to mention, it also comes up wth error 99 when you switch the lens to manual focus.

I think a visit to a Canon service centre is in order!

  • Mark Perry Jan 16, 2013

Thanks for that, it turned out to be a circuit board issue, to costly to repair.
    Thanks again for your input!

Yes, you are correct, Mark. Any of those parts with labor are costly. Save up for the Canon EOS-Rebel T4i (USA). Like buying two cameras (photo & video) for the price of one.

I ended up getting her a nearly new 450d.... not to sad for a 14 yo! I have the 550d, great camera!

Show her how to use the Canon EOS Utility with her new. I think she as well as you will like it very much.

SOURCE: auto focus not working

The lens AF mode is not working. What lens is it you are using?

It is not a camera issue but a lens issue. Try a different lens to be certain.

My d80 wont take pictures in auto,P,S or A modes. Will click in M mode but no picture. What am I doing wrong? Treied to reset, but still does not work.

The camera will not take a picture in P, S, or A if the camera is in Auto Focus mode - and is unable to focus. Make sure that the Auto / Manual focus switch on the camera body AND the lens are BOTH in an Auto Focus mode. A tip off would be that you do not hear the lens focus motor running while trying to find focus.

If you do hear the focus motor, you may not have sufficient light on the subject for the camera to find a contrast "edge". In this case, the focus motor will hunt from where ever it is all the way in one direction, and then all the way in the other - trying to find focus. You'll need to provide more light or if you have the focus assist lamp (on the front of the camera) enabled - make sure your fingers are not blocking it while 1/2 pressing the shutter.

You can take pictures "all day long" in Manual Focus mode regardless of whether the subject is in focus or not. The lower left corner has a green circle or disc that indicates proper focus. Otherwise, a green triangle shape will be visible close by.

More info on Focus is available here. I hope this helps and good luck! Please rate my reply. Thanks.

I have a canon xsi that I have been using successfully for a year and a half. All of a sudden the focus preview is not working. It doesn't matter what lens I am using. I shoot in manual mode. What I...

When you depress the shutter button halfway, you are (in fact) activating the focus mechanism.
If in AF mode, you should hear the 'beep' when focus is achieved.
However, bear in mind that the XSi has three focussing modes: Quick mode, Live View, and Manual. There is a difference in how focussing is achieved between the Quick and Live View modes. (see page 102 onwards of the user manual "using AF to focus").
Also, the barrel of the lens will move during the focus operation.
If this does not happen, then there is a definate problem.
Having images in focus despite having no movement on the lens, simply means that the aperture settings are probably small enough to give sufficient depth of field to include your subject.

I try to take a picture in AF mode while the confirmation light in the viewfinder blinks, a picture cannot be taken, but in MF mode picture taken correctly what is the problem?..

It's attempting to tell you that AF has failed. I'd expect low light, low contrast, reflective subject like a mirror or chrome. A solid colour wall with no contrast will also cause a AF failure. Auto Focus relies on contrast. Switching to manual mode shuts off the system and you can take a picture with nothing in focus.

Canon Digital Rebel XT auto focus

Auto Focus does not determine exposure. Only sharpness. "Wrong" exposure could be due to the metering mode being set in Spot Metering. Set it back to Evaluative Metering which may improve the overall even exposure of your shots. Test your shots in full auto or P mode. M (Manual) mode will require you to check the exposure setting manually (you can see the indicator in the viewfinder when you half-press the trigger)

Auto focus problem

If you set the camera on "manual", it assumes you focused manually and allows you to press the shutter without having to stop half-way. Check your settings.

The settings in Auto Mode are factory set. If you want to adjust exposure and shutter speeds then you will have to shoot in Manual Mode (TV=Shutter Priority, AV=Aperture Priority, M=Full Manual)
