Well, a solution of sorts.

I had the same problem with a Maxtor 500g.
Eventually what I did was crack open the case to discover the HD is a SATA with a small circuit board that converts it to USB. I got rid of the circuit board and just plugged it into my system. Have not had a problem since.
I know this is not solving your problem but if the unit is dead and you cannot exchange it for a new one, you could at least get some use out of it.
Obviously I can't guarantee that what is inside your toshiba is the same as what was inside my maxtor.

Mybook WD25001032-001 keeps on flashing and won't work...what is wrong with it. I need help. Thanks

Hello,

Try plugging the usb cable on a different port on the computer. If the light flashing is red, then there is a hardware problem on your WD. If this is still under warranty, then its best to have it checked from where you bought it or to any authorized WD service center. If its no longer under warranty, then you can open the WD and check for any disconnection. The inside contains a harddisk; you may want to disconnect the two connectors from the harddisk and reconnect them again.

Hi there,

This is because there is a connection problem between the external drive and the computer. If you have changed cables to no avail, you can open the casing of the external drive where you will find the hard disk inside. Unplug the two cables connected to the harddisk and replug it after a minute. Then try again. If it still does not work, then you need to buy just a usb enclosure and plug the harddisk there to be able to use it again.

Hope this helps. Thank you for using FixYa.

Press windows key +R key so you can see run then type in run "devmgmt.msc" then press ok so you can see device manager uninstall all usb drivers then it automatic install usb drivers. then check. Also you need to change registry for that type in run "regedit" then press ok then you can see registry editor then locate below key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11 CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} And remove upper filter and lower filter. Then restart computer then check. Try your harddrive in different computer if it is not recognized on another computer too then power adapter of harddisk or your harddrive has internal issue.

I have window server 2003 OS and 500 GB free agent desktop USB hard disk is not showing in my computer. So how can i rectify it?

I just finished a Chat exchange with Seagate Tech support. MS Server OS's are not supported for FreeAgent devices.

It appears that whatever drivers exist in the XP install that recognize the USB device connection are not the same in the MS Server environment.

I plan to check the USB device drivers from both systems and see if the XP USB device drivers will work on Server 2003.

When I connect WD 250 GB external harddisk ..I am getting error message" USB device Not recognized due to malfuction"..please guide me my laptop is toshiba and operating system is windows xp

Please trouble shoot by trying the device on another laptop.

If it works on another system, it simply means it is not compatible with yours and you have to get a device that is compatible with your toshiba system.

Good try.

Installation isn't possible directly from the Harddisk.
Try download from http://www.seagate.com/staticfiles/support/software/FreeAgentCN.zip
Good Luck.
