Question about Washing Machines

Burning rubber smell water leaks onto floor

It sounds like breaks squealing to the halt at the end of spin cycles. We had to replace the lid switch about 1 yr. ago. The washer was working fine, did a 2nd load, it sounded fine, but I noticed it wasn't making a squeal after what was about 30 mins. I checked on it, it sounded like the motor was running but it smelled like when a belt breaks on a vacuum. We tried changing the belt, and ran a "mini" load of 4 towels. It filled, agitated, acted like it would spin but wouldn't drain and began to leak into the floor.

It is so common that the drain leaks in many ways and is the most problematic fault in a washing machine. In all occasions it is important that your observation is most important and so is vital to the identification /rectification and solution. If you have noticed that water has leaked then as the drain hose pump/valve and fittings are located on the underside of the machine it is important that you look for possible leaks here. In some cases the drain hose would be clogged at the drain end to outlet of the house and so there will be back flushing resulting in overflow to the outside. Also the drain pump/valve can be clogged or the drain hose clamps can be loose on the grip which can all cause the leak to occur. Removing and cleaning the drain pump/valve, tightening of the hose is also very important. Also water can leak if there are gaps on the front door gaskets and must be checked but this will happen only during the cycle and not on the drain cycle end.

OK, we have made it so that we can actually watch where the water is coming from. My husband put the machine up on bed risers and brought in the new oil change pan we bought to catch the drips. It appears to be from the drain pump. We are going to take it apart, see if there is a clog, then replace the seal if not. Thanks for the input!

The motor could be leaking oil. Pull the machine out and look for stains or puddles on the floor.

Washing Machine shuts off by itself during cycle

Not sure what you are saying.. if washer is off balance, it will shut off, check legs are secure to floor and unit is leveled. If washer lid isnt sealed or lid switch is bad it can shut off at spin or start cycle. Depends on unit model. The smell can be a burning belt from a heavy wet comforter or you have mildew from water not properly drained from unit.

It made a quite hum during the spin cycle, instead of the normal (much louder) spinning sound. When I turned it off I noticed it had a rubber/electric burning smell.

If it's a squealing sound, your belt is probably bad. If it's a humming noise with those smells you listed, it might be your transmission going bad.

WILLNOT SPIN OR AGGITATE/IT WILL DRAIN

Just because the rubber part of the coupler isn't shreded doesn't mean that the plastic parts are not broke... There are three stems that protrude from the plastic parts of the drive coupler, and mesh with the rubber section of the coupler... the stems may be broke off... If you smell rubber burning then I would say almost 99% of the time it's a bad drive coupler...If the coupler is not broke and the rubber section is alright then you have a bad transmission... Most likely the main drive gear is bad... Since you said that you can spin the tub by hand, indicates that the brake system is alright, and nothing is caught between the inner and outer tubs... You can rule out a lid switch problem, cause the washer would agitate even with a broken lid switch, but it would not spin..since the machine make any kind of different sound when you run it Like a high pitch squeal or grinding noise?
check the lid switch see if it's not broke... wasn't the lid switch, but I got to thinking it will agitate at the first part of the wash cycle, but when it goes into the slower speed wash, if your lid switch is broke, then it won't agitate or spin...

Roper washer does not drain

Alicia7q : Faulty water pump or restriction in drain line between tub and outlet hose.

arlenekc,: That metal thing is part of the motor. What you have is a leaking water pump.

badwasher,: Check the lid switch. This machine will not spin or drain if the switch is faulty.
