Start -->All program -->Accessories -->system tool --> system restore ..That is one solution or if you want to reset all you should format it with Fdisk..

I have an old Presario 5000 series PC, hard disk crashed, bought a new hard disk and tried to use the Quick Restore CD's to Restore to Factory settings. Can't seem to boot up from Disc 1 of the Quick...

For boot from disk first you have to set first boot device option in BIOS.
for that when you power up the computer press F1 or F2 or "del" key to enter in bios.
Then go to boot menu then set first boot device as your cd/dvd rom.
then save settings then insert recovery diks in rom then check.
Then it boot from disk if your disk and cd.dvd rom works fine.
Let me know if you need more assistance.
Thanks.

Need to restore to original factory setting

For the v5000 I believe the factory restore option lays within the bios.
As soon as you start the laptop it should prompt you for 1-2 seconds to hit a certain key (usually F1, F2, or Delete) to enter setup. Navigate through each section until you find it. If its not in the Bios one of those same 3 keys or F10 usually can get you to the restore partition. After that it should do it's thing. Be sure that you have all your data backed up because it will be gone when its done.

Presario SR1123WM won't restore to factory

If Compaq doesn't have one no one else will either.
Have you tried the recover clean up utility? Available as a download (link below)
My guess is that if it will not restore something is wrong with the hard drive. Have you contacted HP to ask them what it means?
Another option is to buy and install windows and download the drivers from Compaq/HP.Same link

Clean and restore my computer

Your compaq should have come with a factory CD that will allow you to restore the system.

Insert the cd and restart the computer. It should boot from the cd and ask you if you would to repair the installation (or something similar).

Without the HP CD you can pretty much hang it up with a copy of Windows.

Resetting

By factory settings, I am assuming you are reffering to the Operating System, or Windows XP.  If this is not a correct assumption, please let me know.
Unfortunately, there is no way to reset the PC to a factory default configuration with out the discs provided by the manufacturer.  Those discs not only contain the operating system install files, but also any drivers that are used that are specific to models made by that manufacturer.
Newer PCs skip the need of discs by creating a "Recovery Partition" on your hardrive.  Think of this as a snapshot taken of your PC just as it leaves the manufacturer.  It is possibly to boot to this partition, erase you current configuration, and restore this "factory default" configuration.  Unfortunately, this option is not available on your specific PC model.
It is possible to re-install the Windows operating system by using any type of Windows install media (CD,DVD,etc), but you will also have to download any special drivers (video card, sounds card, printer) from the manufacturer's web site.
