Question about Computers & Internet
My wife has this HP notebook running Win 7. About a year ago now the Ethernet adapter stop appearing in the device list and when you plug it into a LAN connection, it is like there is nothing there. Tried to add devices from the manager but nothing new is found. Everything on this notebook appears to run perfectly except this. She has been running on wireless without a problem but we'd really like to get this fixed. We have tried to find a way to install a new driver but since the device does not show up there is no place to do this. Since it has been so long since it failed we are afraid to attempt a system rollback in fear of loosing a years worth of changes that have been done to the computer's configuration. It's an inconvenience factor. I have googled this problem a thousand times and only come up with answers that frankly make no sense. Thanks in advance.
You didn't supply the HP's Model? Did it come with Win 7? Was it upgraded? If you go to the HP drivers and support website, using your model, download the Correct driver for your OS and Device, install, the driver software it will locate the device via the Hardware ID, and apply the driver. That's if the device is funtional. It may be a bad component? I don't know how old the machine is, components fail. The driver is a likely place to start.

Restart the PC and go into the bios to make sure the on-board LAN is enabled, if it is try as jery says and try another ethernet cable.
