SOURCE: okay i have a ibm thinkpad r31 laptop, i have use

Hi

You don't say which Operating System you use, so my answer will be presented in general, Windows terms. If yours is a non-Windows Operating System and my answer seems to be of some relevance to you, please consider applying the logic and principles involved here to your own Operating System and, if in doubt, please feel free to add a Comment or Clarification to this Question. Please include information about its Operating System. Doing so helps us makes faster, more accurate and more assured Remote Diagnostics leading to better quality and more useful Advice, Answers, Guidelines , How-Tos and Solutions.

You also don't say what happened and what fault caused you to need to try to run the recovery program.

It seems the recovery CD has altered the Boot Sector of the Hard Drive.

If the data on the hard drive is important:

Unplug and turn off the laptop > remove the battery > use a small screwdriver to open the Hard Drive compartment with the picture of a small stack of CDs next to it > remove the retaining screw or clip > remove the Hard Drive > use a Hard Drive Dock or an External 2.5" Hard Drive Enclosure (for this you have to remove the small silver Hard cradle that holds the Hard drive fast in the laptop) or an IDE/SATA to USB Connection Cable to connect the Hard Drive to a 2nd Computer > Back up all important data to an external storage device.

Reinstall the hard drive into the laptop > insert the installation disk > install a Windows XP Disc > Boot from the CD > When you reach the 2nd repair screen, press R to Repair XP.

If you have a different Operating System follow the same process > select Start Up Repair (for Vista or Windows 7)

I hope this helps.

Do you mean it won't pick the disc? If so, try F10 it should also give you a boot menu if you don't see press any key to boot from cd... The other option is boot into BIOS and change your boot order. CD-ROM/DVD should be the 1st option.8_28_2012_7_14_07_am.jpg

Restart your computer with the USB drive connected, and press the blue "Access IBM" button on your keypad. Select "Startup Utility" and go to "Boot Order." Change "USB Device" to "Primary," save changes and exit. When your system reboots, it should boot from the USB drive.

Ibm x41 will not boot says boot overload

Have you tried booting in Safe Mode?

Turn off the computer, then hit the power button to turn itback on and immediately start hitting the F8 key repeatedly until you see SAFEMODE. Take the Safe Mode option and let it boot up. Safe Mode will lookdifferent to you, the screen will be darker and the icons bigger, this isnormal.

Forgot username and password for IBM thinkpad x41

Back up your most important data to an external storage device in case anything goes wrong while changing the BIOS settings. Remove any disc that is currently inserted in the IBM Thinkpad X41's disc drive.
2-Shut off the Thinkpad X41 laptop. Turn the laptop back on and wait for the "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" message to appear on the screen.
3-Tap the blue Access IBM button at the top of the keyboard. Click the "Access BIOS" button when the "Rescue and Recovery" menu appears.
4-Click "Yes" and wait for the BIOS to load. Type in the current BIOS password for the IBM X41 and press Enter.5-Navigate over to the IBM's "Security" heading by tapping the right arrow key twice. Scroll down to the "Supervisor Password" listing and press "F5."6-Type the IBM's current BIOS password and hit Enter. Leave the next field blank if you want to completely remove the BIOS password, or instead type in a new password to replace the old one. Press Enter.7-Press "Escape" and then highlight "Restart" and press F5. Navigate to "Save changes and Restart" and press Enter.

I have an IBM thinkpad x41 and it comes to the Windows xp screen needing a password and I dont know the password can someone help me?

You can use Ophcrack, an open source software. You don't need any access to Windows to be able to recover your lost passwords. Simply visit the site, download the free ISO image, burn it to a CD and boot from the CD. The Ophcrack program starts, locates the Windows user accounts, and proceeds to recover (crack) the passwords - all automatically.

Here is the link to download you ISO file to burn to a cd.
    http://downloads.sourceforge.net/ophcrack/ophcrack-xp-livecd-2.3.1.iso

Or use Another computer by installing the exe file and make a cd for your recovery:
    http://downloads.sourceforge.net/ophcrack/ophcrack-win32-installer-3.3.1.exe

    Afternoon,

    I hope this helps?

To recover the hard disk to it's original contents, do the following:

    Note:

    1. If the optical drive is not attached to your ThinkPad computer during recovery, DVD software and CD-recording software will not be installed. To ensure that they will be installed correctly, attach your ThinkPad computer to the X4 Dock and install the optical drive in the Ultrabay Slim before performing a recovery ioperation.

    2. The recovery process might take up to 2 hours.

Attention: All of the files on the primary hard disk partition (usually drive C) will be lost in the recovry process. However, before any data is overwritten you will be give the opportunity to save one or more files to other media.

Power the computer using the AC adapter and ensure a fully charged battery is installed before proceeding.

    1. If possible, save all your files and shutdown your operating system.

    2. Turn off the computer for at least 5 secounds.

    3. Turn on your computer. Watch the display carefully. While the message. "To inturrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" is displayed at the lower left of the screen, press the Access IBM button. The Rescue and Recovery workspace opens.

    4. Click Restore your system.

    5. Click Restore my hard drive to the original factory state and then click Next.

    6. Follow the instructions on the screen.

    7. When the recovery process finishes, press the Enter key. Your computer will restart with the pre-installed operating system, drive, and software.
