Question about Computers & Internet

2 Answers

I went to the Walmart pc dept and asked a sales person for info/help so I would be able to backup my computer data. I went on to say " I was told by a Geek to get some sort of device that plugs into my computer from the outside and it is not expensive and very easy to use...do you know what I need?" The sales person gave me this Kingston 2 GB data traveler to plug into my pc. I said "Are you SURE this will work on my Compaq persario tower?" The sales person said " Oh yes..this is exactly what you need." So here I am asking for advice on what I need to buy due to the piece she sold me DOES not FIT anywhere on my tower! I tell ya...I get so tired of dealing with people that have no clue. If I worked in the computer dept and didn't know the answer then I would ask another person in the dept that DID know.

Thanks for the quick response! Anyway...my computer is a 2005 Compaq Presario SR1750NX. I have tried every port on the tower.

OMG! I just now found a 'thingy' on the side of it and it slides OUT the piece that will fit! LOL

The piece reminds me of a exact-a (sp) knife where you have to push the lever up to get the blade up/out.

Thanks again all... this place is wonderful! I have a few gazillion computer questions I could toss in but don't have the time right now. lol

The Kingston 2 GB Data Traveler 100 is the same shape and smaller than a cig. ligher! The Kingston is a black plastic divice with a small lil piece on the side of it. The piece on the side works kinda like a Exacto knife. Using an Exacto knife you first have to push the plastic part (on it's side) up to reveal the knife.

So it is the same with the Kingston divice where the wee plastic ridge must be slid forward to reveal the piece that will fit into any usb port.

I had no problem finding the many usb ports on my pc...it was the actual Kingston divice that I could not sort out! lol

Okay...today I inserted the 2GB divice into my 1.0 GB usb port and it stopped the copy not long after and asked for another divice to cont. the copy. I don't understand why this happened as I have heaps amt. of space on my pc because I preformed a total restore on my pc.

Does anyone know about how many more I need to buy to obtain a complete copy of my pc?

    Thanks again!

I am sooo happy I found this site! Everyone is so wonderful! = D

I'm going to post another question about my HP computer as it has a totally different problem.

On the back of your computer... just below where your keyboard and mouse plug in are to rectangular slots... that's where the kingston flash drive will plug in. if it doesn't fit one way turn it over and plug it in that way.... on mine the tiny writting on the side is up....

I didn't know the 2gb had the sliding piece as my 2gb kingston usb's don't. I just bought a 16 gb flash drive and that has one.

Also depending on the amount of storage you are after... you may want to consider buying and external usb hard drive.... you can get a 500 gb on sale now for just over a hundred dollars (canadian).. thanks for the rating as well....

Recover data from my backup

Which operating system and what data do you need to recover ???
You can create a backup disk with Microsoft Windows 7 or any other version of the operating system.
This disk will contain the files, programs and settings that you chose to save during the backup operation.
Yet, this disk does little good for you if you do not know how to retrieve that backup data.
Luckily, Microsoft offers a simple process for restoring this data to your operating system.
Even a basic computer user should have no problem restoring her backed up data from a backup disk.

Insert your Windows 7 installation DVD into your optical drive.
Reboot your computer and press a key to boot from the disk once prompted.
Click "Repair your computer."
Choose the hard drive that contains your copy of Windows 7.

Click "Windows complete PC restore."
The latest backup data will be selected by default. I
n the event you wish to restore earlier backup data, press "restore from a different backup."
Click "Next."
Your computer will now restore the backup data into Microsoft Windows 7.

I bought 4 G of memory, dell pc tuneup and external hard drive total over $400 from Dell in August. Sales guy from Dell told me it will work like NEW! I am having MAJOR problems last 2 days...Dell won't...

If your computer still works with its internal hard drive, I would say the issue is with the external drive. Try to backup data, then run check disk on it with the option to repair/fix errors it finds. If no luck, try to completely reformat it. If the external drive was purchased as new August of this year, it should have its own warranty of at least a year. This means, if it is faulty, you can get a warranty replacement for it. Just provide the order number or sales invoice number for the drive as a proof of your purchase in the event that you need to get a replacement for it.

When I turn on the computer it takes me to the screen where your name is and asks for a password. I have tried everything to get in but it will not accept any pass word I type in. I'm not exactly sure...

This will only works if your computer(hopes windows running) has no password in safe mode.

just go to safe mode by pressin f8 key and then enter through administrator credits not the user name.
then go to the control panel and go to user accounts and then create a new account with admin credits and then restart and login with ur new account.
after that again go to user accounts from safe mode in control panel and delete the account that is password protected(which u forgot).
then the computer will work again.

WARNING- personal data in mydocuments and other folder related to the account will be deleted. if you didn't backup the account before deleting.
do backup from the new account.

Recently given a computer with an unknown administrator password

in Most of the computers ( if it has a backup recovery inbuilt). When computer starts keep on pressing F11 key on the top of your keyboard. In some computers this function is on F10. But make sure when you do system recovery you will loose all data if you would like to go for destructive recovery. If you want to backup ur files first dont go for destructive recovery but choose other recovery option.
If you dont have any backup system then you might have product key sticker somewhere on you computer. If its window Xp home then borrow XP home from someone and when it ask for product key enter that product key. THis way you can reinstall Operating system.
Hope it helps

Latoof asks good questions.

First, back up your data. Ask youself what you couldn't possibly live without. Your Outlook email? Backup the PST file. Backup your My Documents folder.

Good instructions on a repair install:

Assuming that you have obtained good advice and need to reinstall your computer (clean install)

Best of luck. The local PC store will charge $75 or more for the service.
