Sony Vaio laptop vgn-fs640-w problems

Very unusual problem....laptop will not boot up

when you power it on the dvd drives powers up, hard drive powers up and the lights all light up but the fan does not turn on and the screen does not turn on..........i took the laptop apart and looked for anything that looked bad..didnt see anything i then powered it up and the computer turned on and started to boot up fine and then the screen just went black and the hard drive was still on and dvd drive still on...fan was still on...i kept messing with it and now all i can get is the screen to come on somethimes but not to boot it just shows the sony splash screen and thats it...

could this be a bad processor??? prior to this the laptop would work ok and then freeze and shut down........it got more frequent and now i can only get it to boot up maybe 1 time out of 50 times.if i tap hard on the bottom of the motherboard i can get the screen to come on but it does not boot just goes to the sony splash screen and freezes there...and the fan does not power on.......

does the cpu tell the fan to power on..or should the fan come on as soon as laptop is turned on....when i can get it to boot it seems like the fan comes on once the pc starts botting up past the splash screen...

it uses a pentium centrino 1.6 ghz

yeah it does seem that way.......but would a processor cause that also or not really........from my experince a bad processor will be totally non functional i have never heard of a semi bad processor......

this sucks because its a beautiful laptop........if it was not micro electroinics i could prob troubleshoot it.....but the compnents are so small you really can troubleshoot them.........oh well........i got it for 60.00 today im sure i can part it out for way more..the screen works great and the 80gb hd is good...the 512 ram is good...the dvd burner is good.......i think it is a bad solder or connection on the board....like you said......thanks ill part it out on ebay

The motherboard controls the fan speed - and laptops often turn it off entirely when it is not needed. This sounds like a motherboard issue where an internal trace is broken and sometimes it makes contact, other times not. There's probably nothing you can do except replace the motherboard.

Yeah, a processor CAN be partly bad but I've only seen it once, and it was repeatable and got worse with heat. It's so much more likely that it's the motherboard that I wouldn't consider it worth trying.

How to Boot Sony Vaio VGN-S460 Laptop without CD/DVD ROM and With bootable USB

If the BIOS does not have the USB as one of the boot options then you cannot boot up with an USB memory stick.
In this case you need to replace the CD/DVD drive with a new one.

Sony Vaio Model VGN-FS640/W does not show having a battery.

The main battery needs to be replaced, or the charging ciruit on the motherboard is not working, remove main battery get a stiff toothbrush and clean terminals in the laptop incuding the battery, if no change! check the device manager to see if battery is present, if no! reset bios to factory default.

If you have enough room on your drives, copy the Windows disc complete to the hard drive and run setup from the hard drive.

My vgn-fs810/w laptop is not powering up. Battery,

Motherboard is faulty. You can try removing the hard drive and dvd drive to make sure those aren't shorting out the motherboard. You can also try each memory stick to make sure neither one is shorting out the motherboard.

Laptop will not boot, Sony Vaio VGN CR220E, lights come on, don't hear the Hard drive start up, however. I get the clunks from the CD drive, but that's all.

Hi,
Such problems happen when you have either faulty RAM or faulty Mother Board. Repairing MotherBoard Chip is a costly affair but replacing RAM is convenient and most probable solution.

Yepp, its easy to solve that problem. Get in the bios and change the boot up seqvence, ist probly set to look for all kinds of bootble divices, change that to only boot from the hdd in your laptop, disable all other boot devices, when you done that, hit F10 to save the settings and restart your laptop.

Good luck

Sony VAIO VGN-FJ3M/W does not boot.

Possible hard disk failure or hard disk controller failure.
if you feel confident remove the hard disk and replace - obviosuly make sure that there is not power running and remove the battery - replace hard disk then battery then power and try again.

Do you get any beeps? is the hard disk clicking? listen carefully to it and post your findings.

Vaio VGN-S460 won't boot

Maybe simply buy another SATA HDD to replaced faulty one, which you said it came with "clicking noises".

you also can try hold tee 'C" or "F12" when you power on the laptop to get from DVD booting.

Sony Laptop, can it boot from USB External DVD

A bad sector is on a hard drive. You will need to replace the hard drive or you will run into the same problem. As far as booting with an external, some machine will and some won't, you'll just have to try and see if it recognizes it in the "boot from" menu.

you want to be looking for the rtc(real time clock) which is a little unit not much bigger than ur thumb nail.next to it youll find the battery(sometimes heat sealed with plastic.)if you remove this battery for about 5 mins then replace it or in ur case maybe renew it this will reset bios to factory(also method for bypass passwords as every thing is reset)
you might also wanna check ur video card.(connections and dust)
