High definition set top box does not pick up all channels

I have a "Next Wave" High Definition Set Top Box attached to my "Hicon" TV-which is analog plasma. I have had the set top box for nearly three years. It worked perfectly in my old address....but now at my new address in a ground floor unit it only picks up channel 10 and all of the SBS channells including the radio channels. I have a splitter powered by electricity where I plug the antenna cable and have antenna cables going traight into each piece of equipment eg: VHS , DVD players and Burner and Hight definition box. All other pieces of equipnent work perfectly, except for my Set Top Box not picking up all the channels. I would be grateful for any comment or ideas. Regards Maria

SOURCE: Unable to pick up local

first of all, make sure all your connections are secure and threaded all the way in. Next, go to the main menu and press 5 (configuration) and press 1 (search for channels) if this doesn't work, press 4(signal strength meter) and see how strong your signal is. You may just need to re-position your antennae. If all else fails try system reset(number 5) and repeat search for channels. I've had similiar experiences with mine but I have a 62% signal strength and still get 20-something channels. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: my set top box will no longer pick up certain

My set top box has setup menu, channels, autoscan to scan for channels. They changed some of the channels here after the original switch to digital, and a fresh autoscan was needed to again find the channels that moved. See if your box has autoscan for channels, and do it.

The screen on my tv is black on both sides

It's called a pillar box and it's normal when watching standard definition content on a high definition television. You can adjust this setting by pressing the format or pic size button on your original television remote or by pressing the zoom (bottom right corner) on your Uverse remote.

I am getting black borders top & bottom on some channels and side to side as well on Fox on my Dish Net receiver 322 to analog TV.

Hey there! Becki Barned from Dish Network customer service here. The black borders are usually caused by watching standard definition programming on a high definition television. Try to change the format on your tv. Either by pressing the * button below the 7, or trying a format or display button on the original tv remote. Hope this helps!!!

I've just bought a Altech AEC High Definition Digital TV Receiver and even though I'm not a blond female (sorry nothing against blonds) I'm finding it hard to understand the instruction booklet as to how...

Hi mrs Grumpy well this is a difficult task doing this blindly not knowing what you have there But I will try to explain the fundamentals.

First you have a coax (black cord ) from the external antenna. That goes directly to the antenna in on the set top box.
From that box you need a cable that has male and female plugs on black coax that goes from STB to the ANT IN of the Video recorder. Then from the VIDEO recorder ANT out Take that to the TV Now you might not have the right cables as Ins and Outs have different plugs on them You need some that are Male to Male and Male to Female The female plugs are O with and o inside them ( cant reproduce it in text) Males are an O with a pin inside them . so looking back at your connections From the wall to thje set top box is Antenna in is a female plug and Antenna out is a male plug. so check what cords you need to plug these together in the sequence I have outlined.

You will also need some different types of plugs that came with the STB that will be colored RED YELLOW and WHITE connect these from the OUT to the AUDIO/Video in the same color sequence to the recorder Than the next set of colored plougs from The recorders Audio Video OUT to the TV. Now it should all be connected cotrrectly You TV set TO AV should show the channel that is selected on the STB. Use the STB remote to change channel preference for viewing.

Get back to me if you need to cloarify anything.

Cheers Thank you for using FIXYA and please rate the help box.

LG LST-5100P set top box does not display menu with an older ( 1998) tv set. Cant select aspect ratios . All I can do is change channels. Any ideas? Rod

Hi Rod,

Thanks for Using FixYa. If its a 4:3 normal TV or a wide 16:9 TV then you can view high definition picture by using the ARC button on your remote control to change the wide mode(Auto,Letter Box, Pan & Scan). Also check its free user manual for more information.

Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

Thanks

Do we need to buy an antenna to get this TV ready for Digital TV?

LCD TV refers to the substance that creates the picture quality (it would be either LCD or Plasma or Tube) and HD refers to a crisp clear picture that can be attained. So your TV is an LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) TV that is capable of receiving and displaying HD (High Definition) Picture.

What you need to check for is whether the TV has a built-in Tuner. This will either be SD (standard definition) TV Tuner or an HD TV Tuner. The box it came in will tell you or you may still have stickers on your TV.

If it has a built-in SD tuner you will be able to pick up HD channels but in a lower quality. In this case you will only need to plug the TV into a Wall-socket antenna or rabbit-ear antenna.

If it has a built-in HD Tuner you will be able to pick up HD Channels in full HD quaility picture. Simply by plugging the TV into a Wall-socket antenna or rabbit-ear antenna.

If your TV does NOT have a built-in TV-Tuner then this TV is clasified as "HD Ready". Which means that you have to purchase a Set Top Box (STB). you can get either HD or SD set top boxes. In this instance you will plug the cable from the wall socket into the STB then from the STB into the TV using either an HDMI cable (as long as your TV has an HDMI input) or through RCA cables which will be coloured Green, Blue and Red (i think red)

By the Way - best picture quality is from a wall-socket antenna.
HDMI = High Definition Multimedia Interface
STB = Set Top Box
High Definiton RCA cables will also be refered to as YPbPr/YCbCr (depending on equipment)
LCD = Liquid Crystal Display (the method used to make the picture on your TV screen)

If you have anymore questions, ask away.

AWA set top box STB232 connected to Panasonic LCD

Loss of sound is often a SCART connection problem. Check that the SCARTS are pushed in securely. Or if the SCART is old, it may be faulty. Try a newer one, or one that you know is definitely ok.
