Re: unable to turn power switch to DVD
Tcshoc, Do you mean to view on a DVD, because the camera has a hard drive and the movies are stored on it, and the SD card can save still photos on it. You can watch and preview you movies on a TV by connecting the camera to a monitor or a PC to edit the movies after you have loaded the software that came with the camera. Does that help? Remember as long as you can see the movies on the camera they are safe. With a 30 GB you can take a lot of footage. There is a switch position for playback or preview or for filming just check to see. You should be able to look at the menu to see how much time you have left for "taping" which is really storing. Enjoy your vacation, and edit you movies when you get home. randy320sgi

I think you might have a problem with the VHS mechanism. Perhaps damage to the mechanical parts. If the mechanism can't perform the task it has been set after a very short period it will send a message to the electronics to shut down. This prevents further damage to the tape or system.
If it's occurring during "power saving mode" also as you say, it's likely drive replacement time. But let's not be hasty. Perform the following:
Turn off PC's power supply unit (PSU) switch.
Unplug power cord from PC's PSU.
Wait 5 minutes.
Open case to gain access to the problem drive.
Prior to touching ANYTHING inside the case, touch any metal part of the case-frame to rid yourself of any built-up static-electricity.
Disconnect the ATA cable from the back of the problem drive (but leave the power cable connected).
Reconnect power cord to PC's PSU.
Turn case PC's power supply unit (PSU) switch back on.
If it still occurs:
You now know the problem is isolated to the drive itself.
It could be, the eject button's gunked up. In which case you might try a shot of silicone spray on it, then work it in by pushing it several times.
if under warranty, return it as it's repair/replacement time.
Something software related is likely sending hokey-pokey commands.
Reboot system into Windows "Safe Mode".
If it stops occurring, you know it's a non-Windows application (software) process that's likely the culprit, which means it's time to play "process of elimination" to isolate which one. Getting SysInternals "AutoRuns" and "Process Explorer" can come in handy with this chore.

I had the same problem, my recorder was past it's warranty though. So I opened the case (4 screws on sides & 3 [silver] screws on rear) then unsecured the HDD (4 screws with rubber grommets and 1 screw with thin metal flange) I then disconnected the data and power cable (as illustrated on HDD) powered the whole unit up and got nothing (obviously) reconnected the HDD and plugged the unit in. It powered up and then turned itself off. I then turned it on using the power button and voila, it worked perfectly!
All HDD stored videos were still there too! The unit even held the same time.

Try unplugging the hdd & then turn on the dvd recorder & wait for about 5 minutes.
Then unplug the dvd recorder & plug in the hdd & turn back on the dvd recorder to see if that fixes the problem.
