Question about Whirlpool GX5FHDXV (248 cu ft) Bottom Freezer French Door Refrigerator

Ice Maker is not working

My ice maker stopped working, I am wondering if it is the solenoid on the back of the fridge that controls the flow of the water. If anyone had a part number that I can order that would be appreciated as well.

SOURCE: Ice maker sotp making ice / red light blinking

J, As you open the freezer door the LED on the right should flash 2X with a pause repeatedly. When you hold the left side emmiter down the light should stay on steady. If you have this, you know the optics are good unless the ejector blades are not home. First thing to check is where the ejector blades on the ice maker are parked. They should be resting in the 2:00 position. If they are not, you could have a broken module. If they are in the 2:00 positon the next thing to check would be the fill tube. You want to make sure it is not frozen over. You can disconnect it from the back and see if you can blow through the line or visually inspect it. If all of the above mentioned check out, jump start the ice-maker. Remove the quarter inch screw holding the harness cover on the right side. Remove the harness cover. Pull the ice-maker straight out but be carefull not to smash the emmitter flap on the left side. Leave the harness connected. Get a jumper wire with the ends stripped apout a 1/4 inch. Unplug the refer and place the jumper in test holes T&H. Leave the jumper in and place the ice maker on the shelf where you can close the door. Close the door and plug the refer back in. Wait 30 seconds and open the door. The ice maker should be cycleing. Pull the jumper and place the module cover back on. Put the ice maker back in the rails. It should fill at approx the 12:00 position. Let me know how you make out. Catriver.

SOURCE: Ice maker stopped working

are the "fingers" of the icemaker pointed toward you and slightly up? if not the icemaker is internally broken . is the red light to the right blinking twice and then a one second pause? if not the emmitter is broken. is the black hose coming from the ceiling blocked with ice ? if so the water vave is broken allowing water to seep in hose and freeze. hope this helps.

SOURCE: no water flow to ice maker

Two possible answers on this one. The water control valve for the ice maker is defective or the switches inside the front of ice maker are stuck.

SOURCE: ICE MAKER QUIT MAKING ICE ON MY WHIRLPOOL FRIDGE

I had a Whirlpool Model GD5SHAXNS in which the icemaker quit working about the same time (3 years old). I had water out the dispenser, I found that it was the icemaker itself failed not calling for water to fill it. I replaced it with a icemaker on-line for about $100 and problem fixed. I have been told his is a common problem with the icemaker in this model ref.

Power to ice maker but won't make ice

Hallo

1:At the back of the Fridge at the bottom there will be a water inlet splitting up in two separate pipes, each supplying a solenoid.
2:Trace the pipes from there and see witch pipe flows into the Freezer(usually its the one on the right hand side).
3:Now turn the fridge of and place your hand one the solenoid and turn it on, you are suppose to feel a bit of a shock(kick) witch tells you it opens up and can supply the ice maker with ice.
If it does supply the ice maker then the controller(cycle timer) on the ice maker if faulty and you should order a new controller.
4:If so send me the brand name of the fridge with serial and module number and your country and city and ill get the nearest suppler to you.

Regards

Why has my American-style fridge freezer stopped making ice?

Hello Michael;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

You did not provide a model number so I will help you as best I can. The fact that your water dispenser works narrows it down.

Here are the causes for your icemaker not to fill:

1.) In the back of your refrigerator there is a solenoid valve for your ice maker and another for your water dispenser. The solenoid valve for your icemaker has the smaller plastic tubing that runs up the back of your refrigerator to the top. With the unit unplugged, remove the bottom back cover. remove the two connectors on the solenoid valve. Using a multi-meter, set the meter to the lowest Ohms. Place one meter lead on one of the solenoid metal contacts and the other lead metal contact. If the solenoid is good the meter will read; '0'.

Ice makers have control modules. The control module tells the water solenoid valve to open and for how long to fill the ice cube mold. Then a temperature sensor will tell the control module when the ice cubes are frozen. The control module will, if the ice maker is cast steel - will tell the heater to turn on for a period of time, and then tell the fingers to rotate to discharge the cubes, or if it is a flex mold, to flex. Then the cycle repeats.

The only one ice maker that is repairable is the one with the cast steel mold. The others are just throw-a-ways.

So, if your ice maker solenoid valve checks out, replace your ice maker. Do not buy it locally. You can save 40% or more if you buy over the internet

Whirlpool ice maker not working

Ice makers are some of the most worked part of a refrigerator and have about a five year lifespan. There are just too many things that can go wrong that can stop the ice making process. To explain the process of a Whirlpool ice maker I am going to post a Whirlpool Ice Maker Troubling pdf and a short YouTube Icemaker Repair toutorial. If you have any questions I will be here to assist you, Thanks Sea Breeze

Ice maker not making ice water dispenser works well

There are 2 solenoids, one controls the water dispenser the other controls the ice maker water supply. Follow the tubing down the back of the refrigerator to find the ice maker solenoid. If the line is frozen between the back of the refrigerator and the ice maker it won't make ice either. If the line is frozen you need to check to see if the solenoid is leaking, this allows a trickle of water to continously flow through the lina and freeze.

The Ice maker has stopped working.

There are usually 2 small solenoid valves that are used to control water. Both are generally installed at the rear close to the bottom of the fridge. One of the solenoids controls the water flow for drinks and the other is to control water flow to the ice maker. You can determine which is which by tracing the water supply tubes from the freezer compartment to the solenoid or by process of elimination. The latter method requires that you feel for movement (clicking) or heat on the water dispenser solenoid while someone starts to fill a glass with water from the fridge.

Before going any further, make sure that the ice cube detection arm in the freezer is not up. Gently push the arm down if it is. When ice cubes are ready, the ice maker turns on a small heater to break the bond of the ice cubes to the cube mold. The arm is lifted up and out of the way. Then the mechanical fingers wipe or push on the cubes to dislodge them from the ice cube mold and they fall into the container. The arm is then lowered again and rests on top of the ice collected in the container. The position of the arm when resting on the ice cubes determines whether or not any more ice cubes are made.

If the arm is hanging down, then ice cube production should be on. The problem may be either a faulty solenoid valve (mentioned above), switch in the ice maker assembly - the detection arm in particular or wiring between.

Stopped making ice

First of all is the water flowing into the ice-maker? Check the solenoid valve which regulates this water flow to the dispenser & ice maker. If water is flowing in, the ice-maker's thermostat may have malfunctioned, since this thermostat is separate from that inside the fridge...........sodeep

Ice maker not working

Cause could be the solenoid valve which controls water flow into the ice maker.

Could be bad solenoid, bad relay for solenoid, clogged solenoid valve, corroded electrical connections, etc.

More info? Let me know...

Ice machine will not stop filling with water...overflows

This sounds like a stuck water valve. Un-plug the fridge and see if the water stops flowing to the ice maker. If it stops, it's a control board (if equipped) or ice maker issue.

If not, turn the water off to the fridge, pull the fridge away from the wall, get behind it and trace the water line (small, plastic line) from the back of the fridge going down to the water valve. Remove the cover, and you may need to remove the water solenoid (the water valve) and see what happened.
