Question about Canon EOS 400D / Rebel XTi Digital Camera

Vewing the shot before I take it on the lcd

Got an Canon XTi for Christmas, cannot figure out how to view the shot before I take it on the lcd screen. Scanned through the manual and could not find the solution. Is it possible to see the shot before it is taken on the lcd screen? This is my first Digital SLR Camera, was a photography major in my undergrad but had a Canon AE1 film camera, so this is all new to me. I would appreciate you help. Thank you, Janet

Hi Janet;
On most DSLR cameras you cannot compose or shoot using the LCD screen. The ability to preview the image using the LCD is fairly new to SLR's, and is known as "live view" on most models. So, like yourAE1, you still need to compose using the eye-level finder, then review your effort on the LCD later.

My Rebel xti will not display live view but will display shots taken - can you help?

This model does not have a live view capability. To compose the shot you must use the viewfinder and then you can check the result on the lcd screen. This the norm on semi professional and professional DSLR's

Canon eos 400d how do i get the screen on rear to show the view before i take the picture

I'm afraid you can't view the image on the rear screen before you take the shot. On cameras like these,( semi and professional DSLR's) this is the norm. You view and compose the shot through the viewfinder and then you can check the result and view all your shots on the lcd screen afterwards

Have a canon rebel eos and when I turn the camera on the only ting that shows up on the lcd is the auto description---how do I get it to just show what I want to take a photo of

These cameras won't show the picture on the screen until you've taken the photo, they don't work the same way as point and shoot cameras. So you have to use the viewfinder. Unless your model has live view in which case it's still pretty fiddly and I wouldn't recommend it.

Have canon rebel xti digital 400d--how do i see live image prior to shooting on lcd monitor

This Canon model 400D or XTi does not have Live view capability in the LCD screen, so you cannot do it.

You have to use the view finder to select the image that you want to capture with it.

If you need a Canon DSLR camera with Live View capability, you need to try other different model such as the T1i or XSi.

Similar problems as other readers. camera turns on but no real time image on LCD screen. LCD contiues to show settings i.e. full auto mode etc. But I can view pictures already taken. Thanks

The XTi and prior EOS models have not capability to see the live image to be shoot on the screen. Only the image after taken can see on the screen. Other images also using the view mode.

If you can't review the images, eve if the display is turned off, just after they are taken, maybe the "Review time" is set to "off". Go to settings, 3th tab, Review time and set the desired setting.

Camera works great, but there is no image on the screen

If you mean that you can't preview your picture on the LCD (like compact digital cameras), this feature was not available on digital SLRs made before 2007 (Canon calls this "live view"). The Digital Rebel XTi came out in 2006.

Lcd screen shows settings for camera not the image of what it is

EOS 400D / Rebel XTi Digital Camera
EOS 400D/Rebel XTi doesn't have live view function, so you cannot see the picture you are taking.

Lcd screen stays on and cannot see subject

"Live View", where you can see and compose your picture on the LCD, was not available on any digital SLR before 2007 (the Rebel XTi came out in late 2006). So you need to compose your picture using the optical viewfinder, take your picture, and the picture shows up on the LCD after you've taken it.

But it's still faster than having to wait until the film is developed. :-)
