Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

Fan and surface light of microwave GE out of order

I was replacing light bulb in our spacemaker XL microwave model: JVM 1331WW 005. I guess the light holder was loose and made a short circuit. Now when I push vent and light buttons, I hear a click sound, but they don't work. It seems there should be some fuse. I checked fuse inside and it was fine. Could you give us some tips? Thanks.

We see (and repair) this a lot. The problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in about a week.

At our Web site, you can get details of our service, plus we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

This can often also affect the exhaust fan operation, too. The lights and fan can be inoperable or stuck on too.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your full model number) for more information & help.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Wher do I get the two pin bulbs for the

Hi there, I checked this very quickly for you, and you should be able to get this at your nearest appliance parts store. It's not a rare lamp, so you should try this first. Otherwise, you can go online and order it. Whereas, if you're not in a hurry, it would run you about $15.00 total (including shipping and handling). It's about a $5.00 part otherwise. Just bring the lamp, or all the information you have here - and that'll help the clerk. I believe this a 20 watt lamp also. Anyway, I hope this helps you. Good Luck, and feel free to contact me if you have any further electrical or lighting problems. - Jim

Our GE Spacemaker xl JVM 1630 has died and needs to be replaced. Who in Hoover, AL or Pelham, AL has one that will fit and will have the lights/fan on the bottom?

You should be able to contact GE and see if they have a "drop-in" replacement for your model.

GE Customer Service is here.

Quite often, microwaves are pretty easy for the DIYer to fix. Feel free to contact me with your full model and symptoms for free help.

GE microwave lights and fan do not work

If one of the surface light bulbs burnt out it may have shorted out the control board. Take the control board out and look for a burnt spot on the board. It may be able to be repaired with a drop of solder or solder in a jumper wire. Or you can purchase a new board, which may cost more than you want to put into the microwave.

the microwave is running even though your not pressing any buttons? it would be a control board problem,. could be main relay contacts welded together.

Glass Surface Light Lens Cracks from Halogen lights use

The lights do get very hot, so they must be a sufficient distance from the lens. Was there an instruction sheet with the new lens? You may need to adjust the sockets upward. You might call a local GE-authorized servicer to see. Concerning the vent fan, this is a problem with the control panel assembly, which we repair nationwide for $39.95. GE Microwave Surface Lights

The control circuits for the cooktop lights and the hood fan are spearate. The problem is indeed with the control unit. It's usually caused by either the filaments shorting when the lamp blows or by removing or installing the bulbs while the oven is still plugged into the power line. We regularly repair these nationwide for $32.50. Details of our service, as well as *critical* safety and disassembly info at our site, which is linked at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

GE Microwave Spacemaker oven, Model JVM240

That would almost certainly be a problem on the control circuit board. If the bulbs happen to short / blow out or if they are removed or installed while the microwave is still plugged in, there is often an arc which causes damage to the board. We repair regularly these boards for such problems for $32.50 nationwide.
