Question about Toshiba Satellite A215-S7422 Notebook
I have had this laptop for a little over a year and about a month ago I started getting the mysterious black screen. I would hold down the power button to shut it down and then when I restarted it, it would start fine. About 2 weeks ago, the shut-down and restart method stopped working, so I would shut it down, remove the battery, replace it and then it would restart. I did some searching online and found a couple of places that said I needed to update the BIOS. So went to the Toshiba site and downloaded the BIOS update. At the end of the update, it shut down. When I tried to restart it, I got NOTHING! I've tried removing the battery, unplugging it, etc.and still nothing. I got out the master recovery CD and tried it. The CD drive would spin for a second when I tried to turn on the system and held 'C' but still I just had a black screen.
My plug in light is on, the power light comes on, and the battery light is on, but the hard drive light NEVER comes on and I can't hear it 'churning'. However the fan is always on if it's plugged in or if the battery is in.
Does anyone have ANY suggestions? I've searched everywhere and found nothing to help.
Sounds like you have two problems to me.
1) The lamp (CCFL) doesn't always light (which can be usually the lamp or the inverter that drives the lamp) which causes the screen to go dark. You can prove this by shining a strong light on the screen (like a flashlight) and you should see an image faintly.
2) It sounds like the BIOS update didn't go well. Meaning it now refuses to boot and it is in a state we call bricked.
I hate to tell you this, but I think it is time for some professional help. If it is still under warrantee, I would take it in. If not, you might be looking at a bill for $300 or more. Sorry. :(

I think I have the answer you are looking for.
Plug your laptop into an external monitor. Once you do that you need to set your power/performance settings to high performance. It is turning the display off because some of the processing needed to display images are not available when not in high performance.
I hope this helps, let me know how you make out,
