Sounds like it is not burning all the fuel . If you have the manual it should tell you how to adjust air flow so it will burn wright. You might need to clean the nozzle that the oil comes out of. The manual will have the cleaning steps to if you have manual. If not i can try an find one for you.

It will take me a little while to find one. Can you email me some pictures of the heater. If you can get serial# and model# it might be a little easier to find manual. My email Is smagill73@yahoo.com

Ignites about every one half second puff blue smoke when fire puff blue smoke will not run continous

statelinespe,

You have a classic reddy heat problem. Daytons are made by Desa the same as reddy heat so they are the same. I have a tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r4124129-yearly_maintenance_reddy_heaters which explains the problem and where to get the parts to fix it.

Thanks fo using FixYa and for the great rating.

I need a service manual for a Dayton oil fired 350,000 BTU heater.

I have a manual for a Dayton 3E218E. If you want a copy email me at Edwards0202@aol.com and put "HEATER MANUAL" in the subject line. I can scan it in and email it back to you. This manual is for 2E510F, 2E511F, 3E218E and 3E219E. I also found a great web site for parts for all these models as well:

Black smoke

Change your air filter and clean the blow by tube that crosses the heads and connects to the back side of the air filter. If the tube or the air filter is clogged, then the oil that the blow by removes is going back into the cylinders, causing the black smoke. Also keep in mind that a Harley will blow a little black smoke upon starting as it ages, it's normal.
