Start by filling the soap dispenser with white vinegar and run on the highest/hottest setting. Most likely this will not work but you can be hopeful.
Next, remove the mounting screws above the front of the dishwasher and pull out of counter. Disconnect the drain line from bottom of dishwasher (usually a flat-head or squeeze clamp) and also from the bottom of the sink. Take it outside and blow the hose out with either an air hose or the garden hose and check for debris. Re-install and check for operation. Also check the drain for debris.
If this fails, then your best bet is to purchase a new dishwasher because the sump pump has gone bad.

SOURCE: soapy water standing in bottom not rinsing soap off dishes

It sounds as if it is not draining. Try to trace the drain line under the sink. Usually it goes into a disposall. The port where it connects to the disposall may be clogged. Another thought. If you had the disposall replaced recently they may not have taken the knock out plug out which would give the drain water no where to go.

The problem is most likely that there is still water residue at the bottom of your machine. If the machine is not fully drained it picks up some of the residue and sprays that onto the dishes during the final rinse, leaving an unhealthy and unsightly film on everything.
Remove the bottom strainers and make sure that there is nothing obstructing the outlet pipe and the pump. If possible back flush through the outlet pipe and try draining the machine again before using it again.

Dishes on upper tray are left with soap residue

Soap residue would indicate drain not holding, allowing water to seep away prior to end of cycle Check the drain valve for obstruction. (2) check and clean the filter in the fill valve as it could be partially blocked not allowing enough water to enter the machine

All my dishes come out with some sort of a residue that won't even wash off with water and soap. The dishes seem to have the same type of residue that the coil in the bottom of the machine has built up.

scrub the film off with a Mr Clean Magic Eraser
make sure your water is at least 140 degrees
use ONLY Finish Tablets... formerly called Electrosol... from now on.

Dishes left dirty - possible blockage

You can probably either unscrew a knob and remove the wash arms or they'll snap off and on. Take off the wash arms and make sure there aren't big chunks of food collected under there. If there's a plastic washer in the wash arm assembly, and it's looking worn, you'd be surprised how much quieter and better your machine will run by replacing it.

Grit like residue after cycle finishes.

I had the same problem and it was fixed by switching dishwasher soap. We always used the same liquid soap for years and when this problem came out of the blue (about 8 months ago) I switched to Cascade action pacs with Dawn. It did the trick! No more residue since then. We now are having a problem with the dishwasher not draining (our unit is 8 years old), but the grit issue has been handled!
