A computer that is shutting down as opposed to rebooting usually indicates a heat problem. The computer will shut itself down to prevent damage. If it will run long enough for you to log in and use it for a bit. You can download and run speedfan. It will give the temperatures from your computers sensors. Usually the only one we care about will be the CPU. If it's getting up around 75 C then you certainly have a heat issue. You will want to go to radio shack and get some "thermal compound" the best one is Arctic Silver 5. It's about $10.
Service Manual for your laptop
Once your at the heat sink remove it and either on the heat sink or on the cpu itself where you see some grey compound. If there isn't much there put about half a pinky nails worth of the paste on it in the center. It will heat up and spread out on its own.

Also if there is a lot of dust, use some canned air to blow it all out.

They call the heat sink the thermal module in the repair guide page 128.

Hi there, thanks for your feedback, actually i need to give specific details about the problem, the computer shuts down unexpectedly and restarts and keeps a cycle of shutting down and restarting for a few mins and then log in.

Ahh I wasn't sure if you really meant it was just shutting down or restarting. Just shutting down is almost always due to heating issues. Restarting is a different issue. Do you see any brief blue screens? I would check the event log for errors and post them here. Ctrl + R then type eventvwr. Also check in C:\Windows\Minidump if this folder exists and has .dmp files into then either windows is crashing or you may have a bad driver. This article shows you how to read the dumpshttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/315263

Also try downloading and burning the Hiren Boot CD to a disc and boot to that. Run MemTest85 for a few hours and look in the hard drive tools section and run a smart test or dft (drive fitness test)

Also on the Hiren Boot CD is a "Mini XP" boot you could try booting into this and if it runs then that would be a good indication that your windows install is bad/corrupt.

If none of this works I'd say replace the motherboard. Bad capacitors can cause the computer to appear to freeze and reboot.

Gateway MT6840 unexpectedly shut down and wouldn't

First - re-seat the hard disk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot and go into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If it doesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty.
Then the hard drive needs to be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer or laptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioning computer/laptop again.

Windows keeps shutting down unexpectedly

Your computer is overheating, it is shutting itself down to prevent damage to the internal components.

Your computer should be serviced by a computer technician. He/she will clean the components and chassis of dust. This will increase airflow over the components, meaning your system will be stable and will not shut down unexpectedly.

Take care!

My HP DC 5800 PC, Shut down unexpectedly. It is not happen regulerly. Some times it happen twice a day and some times it happen once a month. My operating system is Vista business.

Most unexpected shut downs like this are caused by over heating. Is the computer in a closed in space? If so try moving it to where it has plenty of room to breath. If this does not help I would suggest trying to replace the current fans to be sure that they are in working order.

If the Computer restarts randomly, then the issue might be due to any damaged Operating System Files.
But, if the Computer shuts down randomly, it is due to the Processor.
All the Processors will be designed in such a way that, if there is any overheating issues, the Computer will shut down randomly.
The overheating might occur due to the malfunction of the Cooling Fan in the Computer.
As this is a overheating issue, it would be better to get the Unit examined at the Service Center.
Replacing the Cooling Fan in the Computer should resolve the issue.
