You can download the drivers from Brother here: http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public/us/us/en/dlf/download_top.html?reg=us&c=us&lang=en&prod=mfc290c_all . Pick your version of Windows 7 (32-bit or 64-bit) and then the language in the two drop down menus. Next click the Search button. You need the full software and driver package at the top of the page to check the ink level.

Note: if the printer was connected to the computer by a USB cable, you probably got the generic Windows driver for the printer. Uninstall the printer before installing the Brother Software. (Click Start and select Devices and Printers in the right hand column. Right click on the printer and select Remove Device or left click on the printer and use the Remove Device link at the top of the page. Then remove the USB cable.)

This link will not include any third-party software that was on the CD. I can't tell if your disc was damaged or if the install problem is due to differences in the install routines in Windows XP and Windows 7. Most likely you have the 64-bit version of Win7 and the drivers on the CD are unsigned. In that case, the compatibility mode probably won't solve the issue; the downloaded version will have signed drivers.

I hope this helps.

Can no longer check my ink level.

Sometimes Windows 7 drivers need to be downloaded from the HP support site. Also, make sure you have installed the application on the CD that came with the printer in addition to the printer drivers. That is what you would have run under Programs before. If your Windows 7 computer was not used to manage the printer before, you will need to install the HP management tool on it in order to see ink levels.

Upgraded windows 7 from windows xp pro on gateway profile 5.5, but cannot change resolution. All icons are huge.

First of all Un-installed/format it your system and re-installed windows 7 and see it happen again or not? May be, while upgrading your windows XP to windows 7 some file may be left over so while running your OS (operating system) file cannot read properly.

thanks for using FixYa Good luck

Windows seven drivers are needed.

Assuming that you have upgraded from winxp and have the original cd with the software do the following:

1. go to the folder containing the usb or card files
2. copy all the files from the disk into a folder on your desktop
3. right click on the setup file in the folder on the desktop for usb or card
4. click properties
5. click compatibility tab
6. check the box under privilege level to run the program as an administrator
7. check the box under compatibility mode and select compatibility mode windows xp service pack 2
8. click apply and ok
9. double click the setup file
10. you should be able to install the program now
11. after install, reboot
12. click on the wireless icon in your system tray
13. select the network you want to connect to

Compatability issue

Hi,

How to install an XP/Vista program on Windows 7

First of all locate the setup or installer file, this will be either in the contents of a CD/DVD (you have to explore the contents of the CD/DVD) under the name "setup" or a downloaded .exe (executable) file.

Right click on the setup file and select "Properties" from the sub menu.

A Properties windows will appear on screen, click on the "Compatibility" tab.
At the bottom of the tab you will see the header "Privilege Level".

Check the box that says "Run this program as an administrator"

Also at the top of the Compatibility tab you will see "Run this program in compatibility mode for:"
Check that box and if you have the option select Windows XP (service pack 3).

Click Apply and then OK and install your program.

NOTE: if you have upgraded from Vista Windows XP mode may not be available depending on how you system was configured.

How to run an installed program on Windows 7

Some programs will install but they won't run on Windows 7. Again this down to compatibility but unlike Vista, Windows 7 has the compatibility mode working down to a tee.

Locate the desktop icon or the program in "All Programs" from the Start Menu or Orb as it's affectionately known today.

Just as in my tip about installing a program it is just the same.

moz-screenshot.pngmoz-screenshot-1.pngmoz-screenshot-2.pngRight click on the icon or file and select "Properties" from the sub menu.

Click apply and then OK and run the program.

NOTE: If you have upgraded from Vista Windows XP mode may not be available depending on how you system was configured.

Regards.

My brother MFC490CW is not playing nice with windows 7

Visit the Brother website
http://www.brother-usa.com/
See if you can find an updated driver for your 64 bit Operating system . Download it and save it to your desktop. Remove the old driver then install the updated one this should fix the problem. But if you can't find an updated driver, contact Brother.
