Question about Fisher and Paykel Active Smart E522B Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

1 Answer

Fisher & Paykel E521T Fridge Ice Build up behind Freezer compartment. I have had my fridge for about 7 years and ever since I bought this fridge I have to defrost it every 6-8 months because water starts seeping out the bottom under the crisper basket. I have found that this is due to a build up of ice behind the freezer compartment on the top of the fridge. I have had a technician replace nearly every part but it still doesn't seem to resolve the problem. Does anyone know how to rectify this problem as it is annoying having to defrost a self-defrosting fridge every 6 months.

Have they cleaned the drain tube that runs down the back of the fridge? If not and the tube is clogged water will back up and give you the problem that you are having. The only other thing that I can think of, is that the defrost cycle may not be set to a minimum amount of time to where this can be increased to allow the freezer not to let the ice build up.

Very possible the door was accidently left open for a period of time. When that happens, moisture latches on to different areas which inturn creates ice build up. In short, do a good defrost and then restart freezer again.

SOURCE: Hi, I have a fisher

open the doors feel around where the seals close on the frame of the unit do you feel its hot sometimes what happens is when the compressor fan stops running this is one of the first ways of telling also as far as the ice you would need to do continuity test on the tstat heater to assure that they are working properly and advancing your unit into defrost mode when its supposed to be ingore the first comment i just saw that you said fridge feels warm that would be on the inside which would be a defrost problem remove the back panel of the freezer you should either see the fan not working and blocked up with ice which causes the fridge to get warm or either your tstat or heater have went bad if you are the one conducting the continuity test please unplug your unit before testing if you have any further questions please message me back and please remember to rank how this opinion has helped with your appliance situation Thanks again

SOURCE: Hi, I have a Fisher and Paykel E402B

Your automatic defrosting circuit is not working. There are several components that can stop the defrosting process:
1. The defrost control
2. The defrost element
3. The defrost thermostat

Any one of the 3 can open cause the automatic defrosting process NOT to work.

If the defrost control fails, it just stops defrosting and ice builds up on the evaporator coils.
If the defrost element fails it will go into the defrost cycle and not cool again until the internal temps reach 60 Deg F.
If the defrost thermostat fails in the open position the heater will not heat up and the freezer will ice up.

There are 6 models of the R402B so I was not able to narrow down a source your exact parts data.
However, if the defrost control has failed the good news is the most expensive one is $18.95 AUD

Hopefully this gives you something to go on. I think it will either be the defrost control or the thermostat. If you can locate the defrost control turn it until it clicks ONCE and see if the unit shuts off and completes a defrost cycle. If it heats up but does not complete the defrost cycle again your looking at a problem with the defrost thermostat. If it does not heat at all then the problem is the heating element.

The defrost control will have 2 sloped tabs on it so that you can only turn the control one direction. The defrost control dial with the tabs will be no larger than 1/2 inch in diameter.

You most likely will have to make a "contact" enquiry at either site above. For the defrost tmer, heating element or the defrost thermostat.

I have a 10 years E521T fisher & paykel. The freezer compartment is working fine, however the fridge compartment is not working even adjust temperture. It's beeping and can be reset with pressing

Hi,
From thee sounds of your issue you will need a sensor or a fan motor to move air from one section to another. Most likely this would be a fan motor located within the freezer section either not running or air flow is obstructed and can't leave the freezer section to enter through passages to cool the other section. Locate the air ports within the refer section, open freezer door (is there air coming out of air port in this section?). Now, close door to freezer, (is the same air flow still there?). If not you have an air flow restriction and this would need to be addressed. Good Luck, hit me up if you have more questions

using a hairdryer is ok. don't let water drip on it and don't point too close to plastics
ice build up on fridge wall can be due to:
short of gas
partial blockage in sealed system
compressor starting to fail

insulation failure

Fisher Paykel Fridge Freezer

I have a Fisher and Paykel E442B upside down, which is a very similar model, and I just fixed the same problem (temperature was around -4C even though I set the fridge temperature as warm as possible).

The cause of my problem was excessive ice build up on the side of the evaporator coil (which is in the back of the freezer compartment behind the rear plastic panel). I had the same problem around a year or so ago, so I expect it to be a regular occurence. To defrost the coil, I removed all the drawers in the freezer, and the plastic insert by pulling out the bottom of the panel out and rotating it upwards until it released at the top. There are a couple of snap-in tabs holding the panel in, so with a bit of pulling they released. The tabs are either side of the slot at the bottom of the panel.

b3aa35d.jpg
I then supported the panel horizontally on the top shelf so that I didn't have to disconnect the thermostat wire and the circulating fan wire.
52de81a.jpg With a small fan heater set on low, aimed roughly at the ice buildup on the left hand side of the evaporator coil, I defrosted the ice built up. This took around 2 hours or so. Then put it all back together and it worked fine.

I'm not sure why the ice build up on the side caused the problem, but presumably it interferes with the proper flow of cold air to the fridge compartment.

If you don't seem to have ice build up like I did, then it could be a thermostat problem, or a fan problem (a symptom of which would be fridge being colder at the bottom than at the top).
