if your friend is using a dsl connection,im sure he do have a modem from at&t, if you want to share internet connection, you need to purchased a router, here are some brands of the router that is applicable, linksys,netgear,belkins...once you have the router, you will need to contact AT&T technical support to configure the router to the modem so that you will be able to connect either wirelessly or hardwire connection...
If the problem is there both wired and wireless, the problem is then narrowed to your computer's modem/nic device. Speak with a Laptop repair tech about replacing this bit of hardware. When did you lose connection with Internet? Recently or long ago?
Depends on your system, install modem first then the system should ask for drivers. Make sure your dial up modem drivers are appropriate to your operating system. Try the modem in a different slot, some modems are not compatible with some motherboards. If the My Computer/System/Device Manager can't see the modem, you have to try another modem or slot. Then install or Update drivers once the system sees it and will show Properties of it.
Ask the net what the URL is to your modem and then hook it back up to your desk top and use your browser to access the modem. It may have a hint or might come up with your pass code. You can always go out dial up and get the info
The error 680 means There is no dial tone.
The modem is not detecting a dial tone
There are many possible causes of a No Dial Tone Error.
1.Check cable is correctly inserted into back of modem and phone socket
2.Check properties of connection, make sure correct modem is being used
3.Disable "wait for dialtone before dialing" in My Computer > Dial Up Networking > Properties of Connectoid > Configure > Connection > remove checkmark under call preferences
4.Try removing fax machines or other devices connected to the line
5.Make sure no one is using the telephone when trying to connect
