You're board can handel; DDR SDRAM up to 200 or 266MHz DDR SDRAM memory module. Accommodates two "unbuffered", 2.5V 184-pin slots. Each slot supports up to 1 GB with a total maximum capacity of 2 GB. Two reach the MB's max memmory of 2GB. Buy two Kingston DIMMS of, "unbuffered", 2.5V 184-pin

I have attempted to upgrade a Gateway GT52223 from 1= Gig existing 2X 512 DIMMS to 2 Gig on two separate occasions first using Using Crucial -2-1GB 240-PIN 128Mx64 DDR2 PC2-6400 UNBUFF CL6 the system...

Your last results is running your comp OK because it is really only running on the 512 stick. When putting 2 different sizes together it will only run on the smallest, with this said here is a website http://www.4allmemory.com it will test your comp to exactly what type RAM you need . I buy for my clients all the time from this website. Very reliable,Try it..and remember about the 2 sizes

Memory problem

The ASUS web site shows only two ram slots on the motherboard. Sounds as if the booklet has a misprint. Specifications on the web site list memory as: Dual Channel Memory Architecture
2 x 184-pin DIMM Sockets support max. 2GB DDR400/333/266 non-ECC, unbuffered DDR SDRAM memory. So, 2GB is max.

How to install additional 256 MB memory

You simply just push the memory into the DIMM socket on the motherboard. You need to use DDR SDRAM but should check what your I/O bus speed is set at. They make 4 different types of DDR SDRAM. They are DDR-200 (PC1600). DDR-266 (PC2100). DDR-333 (PC2700) and DDR-400 (PC3200). The following links should help you out:

When ordering ram memory for wifes computer

Go with Crucial. I recently used then as the vendor to get memory for a middle school and all of their memory fit with no problems, the shipping was fast and the scanner worked with new and old computers. I would go for the pc2700, although your wife's computer can take both types, faster is better and the higher the number the faster the ram.
