Power adapters, also known as AC adapters, and batteries are used to power laptops. The power adapter comes in the form of a small box with a cord attached to each end of the box. Each laptop requires a different voltage and wattage to acquire the proper charge. When the computer does not recognize the power adapter, it can be an issue with the adapter or with the laptop. Plug the AC adapter into the laptop. Check to see if the charge indicator is lit. If it lights up then the computer recognizes it. Make sure that the adapter is compatible with the laptop. Test the outlet to be sure that it is receiving electricity. Wiggle the adapter and check the status of the adapter indicator. If the light does not stay on consistently, there is a short in the cord. Replace the laptop adapter with a new one that is compatible with your laptop. If the replacement power adapter is still not being recognized by the laptop, the motherboard could be the problem. Call the laptop manufacturer. If the laptop is under warranty, the motherboard can be replaced free. Hope this helps.

Maybe you did damage a component due to overheating? What caused the Laptop to overheat? Does the battery work on another laptop?

SOURCE: overheat?

It sounds like an overheating problem. When it is booted, does it run ok other than just being slow? Check your cooling fan and make sure it is running and not stopped up. That is a number one symtom of overheating is freezing and rebooting by itself. There is a free program called "Motherboard Monitor 5" that will monitor the temp for you and set off an alarm when it is getting to hot. Check that problem first. Hopes this helps!

SOURCE: dell inspiron 1501 work fine turn off last night now wont turn on

You mentioned trying a different battery, try a different AC adapter.

When plugging in the ac adapter to the wall, see if the POWER LED comes on on the adapter, then when you connect it to the computer, see if the LED stays on.

If the issue occurs with both AC adapters (No battery installed) then the motherboard has failed. If one ac adapter works but the other doesn't then the adapter is bad

as long as the southbridge chip over warms every time you turn on you laptop thats mean the S.B is facing a shorting out on it IC.

SOURCE: Dell laptop charger

If the charger is older and since you saw the light go on then off again, it could just be the charger wires. Assuming your charger has a black box attached to it, try pushing the cord in towards the black box (usually the end leading to your laptop) . If that doesn't work, wiggle the cord in that area. If this works, your problem is simply the wire is worn out. You can fix it by exposing the inside wire where the bad connection is, snip it, reconnect and cover with electrical tape. I just did this to my sister's last week.

Remove the adapter when the battery is fully charged, you do not need to have the adapter connected all the time.

Laptop randomly overheats/shuts down.

avoid geeks, try real shops , they are NOT.
it is overheating
and all PCs every made do that, if not serviced
ever heard of service? like a car, like oil filters and air cleaner.
same here but no filters
we clean the vents, and all air paths clean.
never use it on a a blanket blocking vents the go to geeks and it works. ok.

load program that reports, CPU/GPU heat.
see it overheat sure, over 50c is too hot.
and needs service or off that blanket.
i cant watch you use your LT, so.... only you know what you do.
use a desk, or better buy a bottom plate with fans added.
I have a fan plate platform that i use on my hotter running I7 LT's

if the CPU overheats the CPU will shut itself down , by its self
Intel or AMD magic, does that.
the BIOS will see it overheat and crank up fan speeds.
if the venting system is blocked, there is no HOPE NOW.

all PCs must breath, or they overheat, all do.

Check you power settings. It is possible that it is set to shut down at 50% battery power.

My ASUS laptop F8OL always shutdown when temperature rises on top of my keyboard on the left handside but my ASUS NB Probe did not give a warning and itsays Normal, can you help me out

Your laptop shuts itself down to due to overheating. It does this to prevent damage to your components. This may have been caused by one of a combination of the following reasons:

1. Faulty fan.
2. Dust preventing the fan to supply enough air into the board.

Solution: Clean or replace the Fan.

Cleaning the fan isn't a job for the rookies so I suggest you take your laptop to the computer repair shops and have them service it. Unless you know what you're doing. This procedure can damage your laptop entirely.

Hope this helps.

Since the battery totally ran out, hence, now you require to charge it back up kindly do not try to switch on your laptop any more unless you have left it on charger for a minimum of 8 hrs. In case even after charging for 8 hrs it is doing the same thing i.e. logging off then, press f8 key while booting up and from the selection select last good known configuration and hit enter. That will fix everything. In few cases it's also f10 button hence try both f8 and f10.
