Cannot format portable hdd

Step 1:
When you connect an external hard drive or USB flash drive to your PC computer, the drive should appear in the "Computer" window. However, if the data on the drive is corrupted, you may receive an error saying that the disk is not accessible. In order to get the removable disk working again, you will need to boot up your computer using the Windows installation disk and then format the corrupted drive.
Connect the removable disk to your computer. Insert the Windows installation disk into your optical drive and reboot the system. Press any key on the keyboard when you see the prompt asking if you want to boot to the CD. Press "Next" and then click on the "I accept the license terms" button. Click "Custom" when the program asks you what type of installation you want to perform. Click on the "Drive options (advanced)" button. The next window will display a list of all the hard drives connected to your computer. The removable disk will appear, even if its data is inaccessible. Highlight the removable disk that you want to format and then choose the "NTFS" option. Click "OK" to clear the data and format the hard drive.

I want to format my portable hard drive to be able to back up my laptop.

First you plug it in to your lap top , then wait for it to install ..
Once your laptop says your device is now installed and ready to use , go to the start menu , then click on computer..
Next a window will pop up and you will see a list of drives on the left hand side , find the one that is your external Hard drive ( it wont be C drive, that is your main drive of your laptop ) ..
Next right click on the drive letter once you have found it , then click on format..
Once the format screen pops up , just check the quick format box and then push start !!!
Once it is finished , your hard drive will be formatted !!

I have a pininfarina simpletech 500GB usb external harddrive that does not show up in the My Computer folder of Windows Explorer. Tried hooking it up to a different computer with the same results; no...

If it is a new hard drive then it needs to be formatted. You can do this by going into your start menu - control panel - administrative tools - computer management - disc manager. I could be a little off on the wording as I don't have my computer handy, but in the disc management you should be able to right click on the drive in here and choose format. This will format the drive to be used. I hope this helps.

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to detect your hard drive

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA

the leads from your ((motherboard to your hard drive)) make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them there probably old and faulty
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electic extensions or just replace them they are probably old and faulty a computer needs its connections to have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error hope this helps

The first thing you need to do is go into the Control Panel, then double click on Administrative Tools. After that, open up Computer Management, then go to Storage, then Disk Management. This is where you will see all of your drives listed. Be extremely careful in this section because you don’t want to screw up your main hard drive.
What you are looking for in the Disk Management area is your new hard drive. If you only have one hard drive, it should show up as Disk 0. Therefore, your new drive should most likely be Disk 1. Underneath the name Disk 1 it should say Unknown, the size of the disk, and Not Initialized. Right click in this area and you should get a pop-up window. Click Initialize Disk and it should only take a couple of seconds.
Your hard drive is now ready to be formatted.
Formatting Your Drive Once your new hard drive is initialized, you will still have to format the drive before you can use it. To format, right-click in the column to the right of the Disk 1 label and then click New Simple Volume in the menu that pops up. From here, you can allocate how much of the drive you want for a new volume, what drive letter you want to call it, give it a name, and finally format the hard disk.
Formatting the hard drive may take a while, depending on the size. My 500 gigabyte drive took nearly an hour to format, so don’t be alarmed if your's takes a while. Once the format completes, your new hard drive will now show up in My Computer and you can start putting files on

Missing installation cd

Hi,
you,ll need to format the drive first.
connect the IDE Cable ( 40-80 Strand Ribbon )
And 4 Pin Power plug ( Molex )
you don,t need an installation disk to do this.
enter the bios setup, and ensure your drive is seen by the computer.
install windows et,c.
away you go.
