Question about Kenmore 15864/15862 Top Load Washer

Washer not pumping water out or spinning

We have a series 80 kenmore top load washer about 9 years old. We had a problem with it about 3 -4 years ago with the drive shaft and had it repqired. This moring we awoke to a wet load of laundry, dripping wet. My husband put it thru another rinse and it didn't drain. Could it be the drive shaft again or is it the pump? How do we tell and how would we repair. He has made repairs to our dryer.

It sounds like it's the pump. Tip the machine back and try to spin the motor where the pump connects. Make sure to unplug it first though. If it's hard to spin or it doesn't at all then the pump is stuck. Clamp off the hoses with hose clamps so you don't flood the house and remove the pump. It's just two clamps holding the hoses on and then the pump will slip right off the motor. There is probably something stuff in the pump causing it to not spin. It could be anything from a coin or a bobby pin to a sock or something. Clear it out and put it back on and it should fix your problem. I really don't think it has anything to do with the transmission. I hope this helps you out and if you have any other questions let me know. I will get a notification if you post anything to this message. Good luck.

I have a 9 year old kenmore washer that just stops

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Newer model Whirlpool / Kenmore washers use a Lid Switch as a safety device. Unless the switch senses that the lid on the washer is closed, the washer will neither agitate nor spin.

Older models only used the switch during the spin cycle.

Try to bypass the Lid Switch by removing the Console and jumping the two outermost pins on the switch.

This is a Whirlpool PDF on how these washers operate. It has a diagram on jumping the switch as well as a detailed section on how the transmission works.$FILE/L-55.pdf

It also has a troubleshooting guide.

To bypass the switch, you only have to disconnect the power to the washer, tilt the console back, unplug the switch and using an short piece of insulated wire, jump the two outermost contacts on the connector coming from the console and plug the washer back in.

Following is a description of how to gain access to the console and how to remove the cabinet if necessary.

With the jumper in place, try to re-start the washer.

If it works, the Lid Switch is a relatively inexpensive part and only requires you to access the console and remove the cabinet.

There is three things on this machine that concern me. Last week I rebuilt a series 80 and it did the same thing, mostly on perm press. It turned out the timer was fine and the mechanical had not been rebuilt in years. Because of this the motor could not spin fast enough to fling the water plus the pump was leaking. I need three things from you. Is leaking water and oil when looking under the machine, does the motor hum loud even when functioning normally and when its spinning lift the lid, is it still rotating after a quick count to 7? Drop me a line I would like to help.

Kenmore 80 series

Lyzz, someone is going to have to check the pump for debris in it. It is not hard to get off, 2 clips and two clamps. You also want to check the drain hose from the pump right at the point where it exits the washer. I have found socks and other items stuck right at that point. You are going to have to remove the cabinet to get at the pump. Yours will have a cover under the console where you will have to disconnect some hoses. I will attach a couple of photo's to guide back.
