Question about Zenith XBR413 DVD Recorder

1 Answer

I have a Zenith XBR413 dvd/vcr recorder. Just bought some Memorex DVD+RW blank discs to do some recording. When I put the disc in the recorder it says "Unknown disc - check disc again" and pops the disc back out. Why wont it stay in and let me record? Wrong kind of disc?

You may need dvd- disks instead! ( it usually one or the other!) and if your player does take a DVD+ you might have to change brands of disks ( I know this sounds stupid but all disks are not created equal! and do not work in all players!

Memorex DVD-RW (4X 4.7GB) disks keep closing record sessions and cuts off at about 1:39 minutes.

Hi. Sounds like you are maxing out your recording space on your disc.1:39 sounds like the capacity of a single layer DVD-RW. You can confirm this by putting the disc into a computer and checking the "properties" of the DVD. Go into "My computer" [ldouble click], highlight DVD drive [rightclick] then select "properties"[left click]. the pie chart will show you graphically space remainig on the disc

I recently have not been able to record on DVD+RW discs. An error message keeps coming up saying it cannot record on this disc. The dumb part about it is I still have a couple of discs of the same nature...

According to the user's manual, for DVD+RW or DVD-RW discs, it may take some time for the disc to be recognized and then it has to format the disc prior to using it. This should be an automatic process when the disc is inserted (looking at page 17 of the owner's manual). If this is not happening, you may need to clean the DVD with a DVD cleaner (a DVD disc with tiny brushes that wipe the lense on the unit while the disc spins). You could first try using a can of compressed air and blowing any dust/dirt out of the DVD slot (with the tray open).

Trouble with DVD+RW Disks being compatiable or staying formatted

cos they are cheap - get some decent branded discs such as TDK or tayo yuden and it should be fine

Also check the manual and or requirements on there website and it should show which are the best discs to use for that player but TDK or tayo yuden should be fine.

www.svp.co.uk or any where you can buy discs from should be fine

Some blank DVD+R discs will not read on my DVD player

The JVC DR-MV1S DVD Recorder / VCR Combo does not suppport DVD+R, only DVD-R, -RW etc.
At least mine only supports these formats, as when I first bought mine, I got some blank DVD's they were DVD+R.
I recorded a movie onto one on my PC, then tried playing it in the JVC unit... no go!
Instruction manual (available for D/load online) proved to me that I could not play +R disks!!

See the manual, page 8:

What are “Recording modes”? for DVD-RW
There are two recording modes available using this
recorder: VR mode and Video mode. When recording to
a DVD-R disc, recordings are always in Video mode.
DVD-RW discs can be formatted for VR mode recording
or Video mode recording.
VR mode recording
• 4 different picture quality/recording time settings available
(SP, LP, EP, XP)
• Not playable on regular DVD players
• Recordings can be extensively edited
• Total number of titles on the disc should be less than
99.
Video mode recording
• 4 different picture quality/recording time settings available
(SP, LP, EP, XP)
• Playable on regular DVD players (after finalizing)
• Limited editing features
• Total number of titles on the disc should be less than
99.
Note :
DVD-Video Format (Video mode) is a new format for
recording on DVD-R/RW discs that was approved by
the DVD Forum in 2000. You may therefore experience
problems playing recordable DVD discs in some players.
Symptoms include video artifacts, audio and/or
video dropouts and playback suddenly stopping.
Our company cannot take responsibility for problems
playing discs recorded on this VCR/DVD Recorder in
other players.
