Question about Whirlpool MH1150XMQ Microwave Oven

1 Answer

My MH6150XHQ quite cooking

Everything else on my MH6150XHQ works but it no longer cooks. When I turn it on all I hear is a loud vibrating sound. I took it apart pluged it back in and put a screw driver near the transformer and the magnitizim from the transformer pulls the screw driver in a pulse like motion just like the vibrating sound. What could be the problem ? I'm guessing its either the transformer or possibly the capacitor but which one could it be ? Please help, this unit costs to much money to replace.....

Thanks for the comment in regards to my problem. However my wife and I were out the other day and found a "scratch and dent" microwave which would normaly cost $290.00 and got it for only $125.00. We figured since it would probably cost more then that to fix we went ahead and purchased the new one. But I appreciate the input and if I ever have another problem again I will be back for help.....

Assuming your turntable comes on when you try to microwave, with the symptoms you have, I would most strongly suspect a shorted high voltage rectifier diode or a bad magnetron, or a loose and possibly corroded connection on the magnetron's terminal.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

If you don't find yours, or if you want to look at it without disassembling the oven, you can download it here.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

Here are some links you or someone you know can use for test help, but read their safety warnings first:

(if it's not shorted or burned, it's probably okay)

I have a "continuous" humming sounding when units are heating. The sound is very loud

The humming sound that occurs may be similar to the annoying buzzing my GE microwave produces at random. It could be mechanical vibration. Doesn't seem to affect cooking.

That is the magnetron faulty. The oven stops cooking, as the magnetron lose contact, when the magnetron restart working you hear that loud bang, and it restart radiating.

Replace the magnetron.

You find parts here or here.

Sounds like stuck relay contacts. Magnetrons need a high voltage source which is controlled by a micro to relay and then from relay to voltage source. Even the turntable works via a relay.

Everything works except the cooking part/no heating/turntable not turning, help!

you may have gotten a power surge and that can cause some funny things to happen, 1st is there power to the oven, 2nd if so there may be an internal fuse protector built in to the oven, check with the manual for anything of that sort listed. if not you may have to take it in and have it repaired by a pro. there is a lot of voltage in these ovens and unless you know what you are doing a person could get hurt

Vibrating noise when cooking

In order to try to set your mind at ease I will have to explain the Basics on how a Microwave Oven Functions.
When a Microwave Oven is set to COOK ...START. It cooks at 100%. There is no lowering of the heat as with a Range ( Cook Top) Control. So in order to do the other things such as DEFROST, WARM, or anything other than 100% COOK. A COOK ON- COOK OFF system was utilized. To DEFROST, the Microve COOKS at 100% for 30% of the TIME, then IDLES for 70% of the TIME. COOK ON 30% of the TIME, COOK OFF 70% of the TIME = DEFROST This is why you can hear the CYCLE. More power is required during the ON CYCLE, thus the lower vibration. The Vibration occurs when the High Voltage Transformer is turned ON ( COOK ON).
The VIBRATION seems to have got louder with age. This is somewhat normal as there is a vibration from the High Voltage Transformer present every time the Microwave is used. screws and other metal parts seem to get loose with this vibration. There is no solution, unless you can tighten EVERY screw, nut, and bolt in the unit.
Sorry!

Loud Bang, then Light Stays On, Can't Cook

Something has failed in the high voltage supply to the magnetron. There are no user serviceable parts inside, but there are INSTANTLY LETHAL voltages present. Scrap the oven & get a new one, they are generally not worth reparing.

Microwave runs for 3 seconds and shuts off

This is an inverter-driven model, and this is one way the inverter fails. Often it will tick, too, but the cooling fan may be too loud to hear ticking. If you haven't had smoke, then it may not yet catastrophic. I would bet that a thorough resoldering would take care of it. A good technician can troubleshoot and repair this, as needed, but often they will just replace the inverter. Sometimes that's actually cheaper. Troubleshooting an inverter is way too much for someone without good solid technical experience. I would call a shop and ask for an estimate to replace the inverter. Good luck.
