Thanks for the response. Went half way and gave up. Even if had the laptop a part, Replacing the jack on the mother board looked harder.

Same Problem on wifes laptop. I suspect she may have forced another charger into the port. I am guessing it is cheaper for her to buy a new PC and transfer the data from the drive.

The gateway document describing how to take that laptop apart can be found here. However, I'll just warn you that this is not an easy task, and sometimes the force of ripping the ******** the board ruins the board connections in that area and it will not fix it to get a new jack. This is rare, but know that it could happen.

I need to remove the back to my gateway my6821 to expose the dc jack...my computer just stopped powering up. I get nothing no fan no light nada

The solution I've found is simple.
No need to disassemble computer.
The DC jack will over time crack the solder on the center pin through the pc-board and lose continuity.
First remove the keyboard cover by removing 2 screws (on rear under hinges) and gently prying upward beginning at hinges. Directly under where the power button was and beside the actual power switch find the solder connections for the DC jack. (The jack is on other side of board. You are seeing the bottom of board).
Examine all jack connections for cracked solder around the pins. a magnifying glass helps. Usually it is just the center pin which is toward the rear of the jack, obvious cracking causes intermittent connection or no connection.
If you have no experience soldering I recommend you leave this task to someone who does.
Carefully apply rosen core solder to pin(s) using proper fine tip iron. heat thoroughly til pin moves in hole then apply fresh solder. Be quick. Not too much solder, not too much heat. Be careful not to allow iron's barrel to touch plastic case or tip to build solder bridge to any other connection.
Problem solved.

Chances are the power jack in the laptop that is to blame. It's common for the solder connections holding the jack to the motherboard to break because of the power plug flexing. One way to check is to keep the laptop steady and wiggle the power plug. If the power indicator flickers, that's what's wrong.

The good news is that this is usually repairable. The bad news is that not all service shops are willing to get into this level of repair. The motherboard needs to be removed from the computer so the connections can be repaired. Sometimes the board needs some mechanical repair as well, and occasionally the only way to fix the trouble is to replace the board. Most shops want to replace the motherboard right off.

Call around to shops in your area and see who's willing to try soldering the board. That is usually all that's needed to get you going again.

Instructions to replace a DC Jack in a Think pad T43-1871-4AU

I just replaced mine on my Gateway however you are luckier than I because Lenovo has instructional videos on how to remove almost every device. You will need to remove the DVD Rom, Hard Drive, and the Keyboard for sure. You may have to remove the video output adapter I am not sure. I am not familiar with this model however the procedure to remove the mother board is the same . It is not hard but it is tedious. Just start on the bottom removing the most obvious screws then work your way up. Be careful with the keyboard and mouse they are very delicate,

The best advice I can give you is make a diagram of everything before you remove the screws, make note of every screw and tape the screw to its position on the diagram that way you have every screw in its place and a general idea of where everything is.
Chose whatever works for you. When I did it I ended up with three diagrams one for the viable screw on the bottom, one for the bottom inner screws and one for the screw on top it was a lifesaver.

As for replacing the jack, do you know how to solder? If so you nay not have to replace it the jack may just be loose in that case you can re solder it back on. To replace it you need a solder ****** to remove the old solder then just replace the jack and re-solder.

Can the dc power plug be repaired?

If you are referring to the DC Jack..(the port where your AC Adapter Plugs into) then typically No, THey are cheap enough that it is best to replace with new.... Yes they can be repaired, but chances are they won't hold up to the stress, and will just cause problems down the road...

Desolder The Faulty DC Jack... Go Slow, Use Solder Wick/Desoldering Braid... And A Solder Gun...Flip Motherboard to the underside of the DC Jack, You want to put a very small amount of FRESH solder on all Pin ends of the DC Jack - this will allow better flow of the solder when trying to remove...
Then Use The Desoldering Braid and slowly remove the solder from the DC Jack Pin Contact Areas... Do Not Rush or you will ruin the contact pads on the motherboard, you must make sure all solder is removed,,, if you attempt to rip out the jack cause you think its "good enough" you will end up pulling the C ring from the center of the Jack Pin Hole...

Once You Have All Solder Removed Use Some Flux Paste And Again go over each pin to ensure all solder is gone, then you can remove the faulty DC Jack...

Now.. Clean the motherboard where the DC Jack Was... Remove All Old Flux and take your solder gun and go over the Jacks contact pads so that you have fresh solder on all...

Now Add a small amount of flux to all the DC Jack Contact Pads and add alittle to the Pins on the replacement DC Jack.....

Then Solder The New DC Jack Into Place... Solder The BottomSide First... The Pin Ends ..

Then Flip Over and add small amount to the side negative pins and the power pin(s)...

Now you are done..

You can add Some Heat Resistant Automotive Epoxy ( Safe On Electronics) to the sides and back of the new dc jack.... this will double the strength and prevent future damage/wear and tear...

Laptop not charging even when plugged in- battery or power supply

Sounds like you have a bad power jack. Broken solder connection on circuit board. Is it loose when you plug it in the back of the laptop?
If so that is what it is, seek professional repair as it is not a repair for the novice!

Lost a Cap, MX3228

The capacitor is most likely an electrolytic type, these are a round cyclinder device and they are polarised. From its location near the power jack it is most lkely more than 50uF and more than 20V. The information on the capactance and voltage of the capacitor is printed on the capacitor. If you are going to purchase a new one, make sure you get an exact replacement because if it is bigger in value eg. microfarad and voltage it will be too big to fit on the motherbard and if it is a lesser value, it will fail and not perform as required.
The capacitor is polarised eg + & - legs on the capacitor and these must be soldered in the correct direction on the motherboard, the white stripe on the capacitor marks the negative lead of the capacitor.
If the capacitor fell off during de-soldering of the power jack, you must have applied too much heat for this capacitor to fall off. If the capacitor is not damaged you could solder it back on the motherboard.
You should be using a temoerature controlled soldering iron, applying excessive heat to a motherboard can damage the motherboard as these boards are multilayer boards, there are circuit tracks on top, below and in the middle of the board. make sure you don't put solder across printed circuit tracks, carefully check the motherboard under a magnifying glass.
