Question about Garden

Starts on first pull. Runs about 30 seconds and dies.

Got two mowers from a friend. Both had way too much oil. Drained and refilled with 20 oz. of oil. Both mowers are like new. They start on the first pull, run for about 30 seconds and die. While running they smoke and run rough. Once they die they cannot be restarted until they sit for a long time. (maybe a couple of hours) When started it's the same thing again.

Found the air filters on both mowers were so saturated with oil there was not enough air getting to the carburetor. Cleaned the filters first with dishwasher detergent and hot water, dried them, then soaked them in aclcohol to remove more oil. Dried filters, installed on mowers, and both mowers now run fine.

We have a John Deere lawn mower model JS45. Just

this problem is related to the auto-snesing carburator. If you wrap the throttle cable, that runs down the left side of the mower, around the handle several times and tie wrap in place the mower will run. I had the same issue with mine. the manual is vague at best when it describes how to fix. After you wrap the cable around the handle, it will tighten the cable and the mower will run.

How do you get the oil out of mower to change it is there a plug or do you tip it over

Most mowers have a drain plug on the bottom of the engine on the side. Look for a drain plug with a square head - this is also usually how you check oil level (in many mowers). this is applicable to both riding and push mowers.

Mower starts easy but idles a few seconds and dies.

sounds like fuel issue. you probably need to buy a fuel rebuild kit (diaphram...etc). inexpensive. you might find it at napa or your local tractor supply. just give them model number of engine,

Won't start at all

your air filter could be clogged. Also, you can remove the plug and spray a small amount of starting fluid in and replace plug and see if it starts.
