Question about Hunter (25417) Ceiling Fan

Baseball fan four wires from box, black, white, red, copper wires from fan- black with white line, gray, black, white, green I keep popping breaker. What's the proper wiring?

Here's the wiring: black from box to black from fan; red from box to black with white line from fan; copper from box to green from fan; white from box to white AND gray from fan. Hope this helps.

I don't know where you live, so I don't know if there is a color code used like there is here, in Massachusetts. Typically, white is neutral. Neutral and ground are not really interchangeable terms to electricians - but often are to homeowners. Read this until you understand:

1) If you have two separate bars in your panel, and one has only white and / or gray insulated wires connected and the other has only bare or green or green and yellow striped insulated wires connected, you must connect the white wire to the bar with the white / gray wires. Do NOT connect it to the bar with bare / green insulated wires.

2) If you have one or more bars in the panel, and both have a mixture of white / gray and bare / green wires, and the bars are screwed directly into the panel back - or have a jumper connected between them, you should be able to connect the white wire to any available terminal on the bar(s).

Colored insulated wire (not green, white or gray) usually means it is not neutral or ground. In an electrical panel, most times if it is not neutral or ground, it is "hot". If there are two colored (hot) wires and a single white or gray (neutral), the white goes to neutral bar and the hot wires go on adjacent circuit breaker terminals - in this case, a 2 pole circuit breaker.

Your gas or oil fired furnace likely operates on 120 volts (hence the white wire for neutral), while the AC compressor and blower is probably 240 volts (hence the need for the second colored wire). You may need to connect these two hots to one "2 pole circuit breaker" for the AC to work.

A typical 2 pole circuit breaker has two handles tied together - and internal connections.

Look at the wires to get an idea as two what size breaker they need to be connect to - #8 copper 40 amps, #10 copper 30 amps, #12 copper to 20 amps and finally, #14 copper to 15 amps. If you are unsure, and my background on the way things should normally be do not jog your memory, STOP. call an electrician and have it connected correctly and safely.

The white wire is used to power electronics inside timer:

Single pole switch has two insulated wires.
Remove both insulated wires from switch.

Timer black connects to one of the insulated switch wires, or to Hot wire from breaker
Timer red connects to the other insulated switch wire, or to Load wire going to fan, light, motor.
Timer white connects to Neutral wire from breaker box. Neutrals are white wires that are twisted together and pushed to back of box.
If box does not have Neutral wires, then connect timer white wire to bare ground wire.
Timer green connects to bare ground.

Turn power on, and check if timer is working. If timer is not working, then reverse timer black and timer red wires.
This wiring information has been tested and is accurate.
If timer does not function correctly with correct wiring, then move timer to another location to see if timer is defective, if timer does not work on specific Load, then noise or interference on line can be suspect. Also check ratings for timer and compare with Load ratings.

If you have countdown timer connected to whole house motor/fan, then horsepower rating is important consideration. If timer is rated 1/6 HP and whole house fan is 1/2 HP, then timer will not work.

Hello! W/D here.

In your ceiling box, you'll find 3 wires; black, white and bare copper.
In your fan, you'll see 4 wires; black (or red), white blue, and green.
With your breaker tripped, connect the green wire on the fan to the bare wire in the ceiling (this is your ground).
Connect the white fan wire to the white ceiling wire (this is your common).
Connect the blue and black (or red) together, and connect these to the black wire in the ceiling (this is the hot lead, and will supply power to the fan and the light).

You're right, green goes to ground.
Black wire connects to Hot wire from breaker box
Red goes to Load (fan, light, motor)

Ok which wire on the switch goes to the Load?
And which goes to Hot from breaker box?

You can test or you can simply hook up the device. If it doesn't work, swap the two wires.
It just won't work until the 2 wires are correct.

As a general rule for timers and dimmers:

The Black dimmer wire connects to black hot wire coming from breaker (122V line)
The red dimmer wire connects to Load (wire going to chandelier)

The wall red wire that is capped could be a couple different things. a) It could go to a second switch that was used to control the chandelier. b) it could be another wire that goes to same ceiling box as chandelier to be used to control a fan, except you don't have a fan. In the second case, if you install a fan with a light, you could control fan and light separately.

The green is a ground wire that connects to bare copper wire in box. The bare copper connect back to main breaker box on the Neutral busbar.
White wires that are twisted together inside your light switch box also connect back to to main breaker box on the Neutral busbar.
The ground wire and neutral are a redundant safety system to protect you from electrical devices and appliances that have 'shorted'
The black hot wire connects back to the circuit breaker.

For example, each circuit breaker controls one area of household lighting. The black white and copper wires leave breaker box in a single romex cable. The romex travels to a junction box in the area where the lights are located. The junction box is usually a switch box or a ceiling box. From the junction box, the romex travels to each other switch, light and receptacle box in the area. So each box has 1 hot and 1 neutral and 1 ground that is connected in a line that leads back to breaker box.

Wiring a ceiling fan w/light


To add to red54's comments:

This is what I believe you have:

- one source in the ceiling box (black & white)

- one donwline circuit in ceiling box going to another wall/ceiling box (black&white)

- on switch wire in ceiling box coming from your wall switch (black & white) -- this is the white wire which will be hot when the switch is truned on

Here's how it should be connected:

- all 3 blacks in ceiling box connected together -- no other wires in this bundle

- white wire (which is hot when switched) coming from switch connects to the black/blackwhite fan wires

- connect all reamining white wires together in bundle

- connect all ground wires together

It's that simple. Trick is figuring out, of the three cables in the ceiling box, which is source, which is downline, which is switch.
Maybe red54's procedure can help you figure that out.

Wire a 4 prong l dryer box


First with any electrical repair, safety must be observed. Be sure the circuit is turned off at the breaker panel (check wires with a voltage tester)
quality gloves and eye protection should be worn.

Typically the terminals or screws in the plug will be color coded (2 brass, 1 aluminum & 1 green)

The black and the red are both hots and can be connected to either of the brass terminals.

Red - hot = Brass terminal
Black - hot = other Brass terminal
White - neutral = aluminum terminal
bare copper - ground = green terminal

I HAD GAS DRYER AND I JUST CHANGED OVER TO ELEC AND I WAS TOLD TO USE THE NEW 4 PRONG SO I WIRED IT IN AND I DIDN`T HAVE A ONE PIECE BREAKER SO I USED TWO 15 AMP TOGETHER AND I HAVE NO HEAT IN THE DRYER....


You need a 30amp double pole breaker and be certain that the fuse box is a grounded box, so that your white neutral wire is separated from the green ground wire.
On the dryer your wiring should be as follows:
Red.....left or right terminal
Black...Left or right terminal, (or remaining end terminal)
White...Center terminal
Green: Attached to dryer frame or chassis terminal

In the fuse box:
Black to 1 breaker terminal
Red to other breaker terminal
White to neutral terminals in the box
Green to the ground terminals in the box

If you have no green or ground terminals in the box, then the green wire at the dryer should be connected to an active ground source, i.e., a copper water line or preferrably a copper ground rod.

Green and copper are the ground wires and I believe you can connect both these to the green wire from the fan (I only have the copper wire in the actual ceiling box). Black and Red can be treated as both black and both can be connected to the black wire from the fan (this is what I did in all my fans and it worked). White is the neutral wire and can be connected to the white wire from the fan (this is what I did in all my fans and it worked).

My ceiling box has the copper, red, black, and white wires. The ceiling plate for the fan I bought had a green wire. I connected the green wire from the ceiling plate and the copper wire from the ceiling box to the green wire from the fan.
