Hp DV1000 backlight flickers on then off on button press

Hi guys, I've got an HP DV1000, worked perfectly for years and then out of the blue the back light does not work. When I press the lid button the light flickers on from the right of the screen for a fraction of a second and then off again. I don't know if it's the inverter, just the switch or something i've missed. Linux (ubuntu) isn't detecting the button being pressed at all.
Any help would be great. cheers

Same....stays on for 1 second then shuts off. Occasionally will stay on while the bottom corner gets hot and buzzes...eventually turning black.

I have the exact same laptop with the exact same problem. It's driving me INSANE! Did you ever find a solution? I'm sitting here typing this with no backlight... I just hit the lid close switch every once in a while so I can see what I'm doing during the 1/2 second that the backlight flickers on. Pathetic.

If you go to this site you can get step by step instructions. The lamps and inverter aren't really that hard to replace if you can follow directions and have patience. Good Luck, hope this helps.

It is usually the inverter or the CCFL (lamp). The lamps are sometimes very difficult to change without changing out the whole display (LCD). Changing out an inverter is usually a pretty easy job. No good way to tell whether it is the inverter or the lamp without very expensive equipment. I don't think it is the lid switch such such it tries to fire up the lamp. Although the inverter or the lamp quickly quits.

Hard to say, but it sounds more like the lamp. But it still can go either way you know. As it is still a 50/50 chance.

    Good luck! :)

Screen dim HP pavilion dv1000

The lid actuator switch may not be working correctly. It's a small switch above the keyboard and led's on either the right or left side. Try pressing it 2 or 3 times to see if the display starts working correctly again. If so, it will need to be replaced.

If that doesn't work, you can also turn it on with the ac adapter plugged in. After it boots, press the power button and hold it in until it shuts off and then turn it on again and see if the display has returned to normal.

If neither of these options work, your laptop may need to have the backlight replaced.

Pavillion dv1000 back light does not work

Well, I believe the reason why it isn't working is because:
The backlight only works when your at the dark or at a low light condition.
If not press "fn" and press the backlight increaser on the top of the keyboard.

Hope this helps!!

HP DV1000/screen turns on then turns off.

You could have a defective screen - a defective inverter or a CCFL lamp or simply the video cable needs reseating. After reseating the video cable and the problem is still there then :-
To determine if you have a LCD screen or video card problem, read this and follow the instructions.

Defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom:
  • Screen flashs on red/pink and off.
  • Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal.
  • Picture flickering with dim display or appear black.
  • Picture flickering on and off.
All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp

Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power it up, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight.

Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

Turning on &sterio problems

Hi, my problem was that I had trouble turning my laptop on. It had been getting worse over the last couple of years. It was suggested that the power button should be replaced. While searching the HP site on how to do this, I ran across a solution that said to take out the battery, unhook anything else that might be connected to the laptop, and then press the power button for around 10 seconds to drain all remaining power out. Then put battery back in and try to turn on. It worked! My laptop now turns on and off just fine! Hope this can help someone else....Linda P
