Mine was doing this for a while and now is completely black all the time. I have a thought as to what this might be... I believe the problem is not the lamp or light engine but rather one of the brushless fans failing. This causes the tv to shut down as a safety measure because of the inability to purge the heat that would build up VERY QUICKLY and warp, damage and destroy everything else. I believe the problem being intermittent at first is due to the fan performing a "death rattle". The fan itself could be fine and more of an indirect problem. I believe the wiring coming out of the fan is inadequately insulated against the heat generated. It begins to cook, crack and eventually fail.

The good news? If it is the fan they cost about $15 and can be purchased on the internet. Nothing special about them. You would want to make sure it has the same leads coming out of the fan to facilitate the changeout. Again, I haven't attempted to install a new fan on mine yet but it will be the first thing I try.

If any of you attempt this before I do, please post your resulting experience for the rest of us. I will do the same. Good luck.

I have a 42" flat screen. Only two years old.. It just went black during a movie and won't do anything. When I unplug it and plug it back into the wall the light just stays blue... No access, picture, nor...

Try leaving it unplugged overnight; it may have an IC locked up.
If that doesn't work, it is likely a power supply problem, these are all too frequent with our sets.
There are at least two supplies in your set; one of them (a low-voltage section or board) stays on continuously so the set can respond to commands from the remote. The other is turned on when you power the set up via remote or button push.
If the set isn't responding to either remote or local set controls, it is likely that the main power supply has failed.
Your help request is captioned as a 52" model number but your text says it is 42" so you need to add the correct model number before anyone can help you.

61md10 front panel controls lit uo, but the TV does not respond

With a non responsive remote that would be inpossiable you need to replace the control board inside around $100 bucks then you can have a good tv again but to get to the service menu your controll has to be working.

I went turn on my tv the picture came on then off

Picture turned Yellow because the Blue CRT stopped working. Power turns off because the power supply is indicating a fault. you probably lost your HT (high tension [voltage]) power supply on the blue CRT (picture tube). Professional assistance is recommended. HT power supply CAN DELIVER A LETHAL SHOCK even when the set is unplugged.

Check to make sure you reconnected the jumpers to connect the board that you removed. Also, check to make sure no resistors are burning. If still no pix, make sure you reconnected multi pin plug by digital convergence unit (DCU). Next, disconnect conv. plugs marked red, green and blue. This should allow power to come up if chip(s) are bad. Next, check pico fuses on board by jumper connectors or in power supply. If these are open look for solder bridges around conv. amps. Also, if any of these are open check all zener diodes beneath heat sinks where you installed conv. amps. Probably 27 v glass zeners shorted if solder bridges were created when changing chips. Good luck, sometimes you just get a bad I.C,Russmann.
