Sounds like you have a heat pump the w2 on old thermostat is for a second stage heat. If you can give me a little more information on type of system you have (forced air furnace with heat/cool, Heat pump or boiler)? How many wires are on old thermostat? Is it a no programmable or programmable? How old is the furnace?

The Orange wire for the reversing valve and used with a Heat Pump
If you have a heat pump, then yes. If you have a gas furnace then no. If you have a HP and the reversing valve is not connected, then you might just be using the emergency electric heat strips. :-o

I am replacing an T8411R with RTHL3550 and I have the following wires. Original vs New G=G,R=R,Y=Y,O=O......? I have a W2 and an E wire that go into different screws on original but no seperate terminal...

C is actually a power wire; it provides power for some programmable thermostats. You don't have to connect it on the new thermostat; cover the end with electrical tape to avoid it causing a short. (If you keep that wire accessible, it will be nice for someone who wants to use another programmable thermostat. The ones which can talk to wireless networks require this wire.)

Do you have a heat pump? That is the only time a thermostat uses an E wire.

The W2 wire should go to AUX (third screw terminal from the left) and the E wire should go to E (second screw terminal from the left). See page 25 (27 on the pdf) of the Quick Installation manual for the RTHL3550. This manual is available from Honeywell at http://yourhome.honeywell.com/home/Products/Thermostats/Digital-Non-Programmable/RTHL3550D.htm .

I hope this helps.

W and W2 wiring on old thermostat...where do they go on the new thermostat?

It depends on the equipment you are connecting the thermostat to. If you have a heat pump, the thermostat must be wired differently than if you have separate heating and cooling equipment. If you have a two-stage or modulating furnace (or boiler), the w and w2 wires will conect for heating, and the y and g wires will connect to the air conditioner. Naturally, some configuring must be done with the new thermostat so that it acts correctly. w-w2-wiring-old-thermostat-go-new-u40lsvyytnuesyuv3fbafhtd-1-0.jpg

The old thermostat has a second stage heat which is W2. The new one doesn't have second stage heat.
The wiring your describing on the old thermostat is telling me you have a heat pump with second stage heat and the new thermostat is for air conditioning only. You will need to get a thermostat for a heat pump.
