Question about White Sewing 1766 Mechanical Sewing Machine

Hand wheel spins without moving the needle

I have an older kenmore zig zag sewing machine. When sewing the needle will stop in the down position and then the hand wheel starts spinning freely without moving the needle. If I hold on to the inner wheel and turn the outer hand wheel backwards until snug it will sew for a little while before doing it again the especially happens when going through more than 2 layers of fabric or when you come to the vertical stitches on a hem. I thought that it might be the clutch, but then again I don't know for sure. When my machine does this it gather's the bobbin thread in a huge clump underneath. I know that my machine is threaded correctly so that is not the problem. I am a seamstress, but have never had a machine do this before. So I am stumped. Please help.

I used to have an old Bernina that had an inner and outer hand wheel. Loosening the inner wheel disconnected the needle bar from the motor so you could wind the bobbin without running the needle up and down. It sounds to me like your machine has the same feature, but resistance on the needle makes the inner wheel loosen up. I don't know whether wrenching on it as tight as you can would be enough, or whether this is a symptom indicating that there is something loose internally in the connection between the inner and outer wheels. Good luck!

Needle is stuck in left position

Really not able to provide much help without knowing the make & model. However, if it is an older mechanical machine, quite possibly it is seizing due to old oil that has dried.

Wheel on right side that controls the needle up and down is very tight...

My machine worked fine and I go to use it and I put the bobbin in and I can't get the needle to go down I cleaned out the bobbin case and still it won't work. What do I try now?

Model and make of machine please, as that may make a big difference to what the problem may be.

Without knowing what machines it is, I can ask, does the hand wheel turn ? Does the needle move at all ?

Check that the throat plate is the correct one for the stitch you're doing and has not been raised. Check you have not set for zig zag stitch ( wider stitch width ). Stitch width too wide may put needle out of position so it can't do down.

How do I adjust the needle position for straight sewing?

The stitch Width selection regulates straight-stitch or zig-zag width. Needle position does not determine straight or zig-zag. Needle position just determines whether the needle's home position is center, left, or right. Needle position can be used with straight or zig-zag stitching.

How do you fix a left of center needle on a Morse Apollo 6500 sewing machine?

Is this machine new to you? Some of the older (but goodie) machines have a needle that defaults to the left. (I have an old Nelco that has this--great machine, just takes getting used to sewing with the needle in that position.)

Otherwise, I suspect the machine needs a thorough cleaning and oiling because the old oil may have dried out and is causing it to seize.

Check the position of the Button Hole Stitch adjuster that is directly under the stitch length control. It looks like a flat head screw and should be straight up and down for normal sewing.

Trouble sewing lycra fabric using a zig zag stitch

You have the machine set for blind hem stitching. Change the stitch selector to stretch stitch, which is a single, in line stitching zig zag stitch.

Can't tighten clutch on Kenmore zig zag sewing machine.

The clutch has fallen off the shaft. Remove the very small screw in the clutch release screw to remove the clutch release. Place the clutch(round thing with ears on it) back on the shaft with the center ears pointing towards the outside. Put the clutch release screw back on. Tighten it to make sure it works
properly. Put the small screw back in the clutch release screw and test it again. If it will not tighten or release properly, remove the clutch ,rotate it180 degrees and try it again. This should solve your problem.

The fabric doesn't move forward.

Hi,

What is the length set at?

Are the feed dogs visible at the needle plate?

What does the design look like in the pattern box?

Have you tried it on the straight stitch to see if is effected also?
