To reformat, you have to boot from another source like a CD. you can't reformat a drive while it's being used, so get yourself an operating system disc and you can reformat/reinstall.

Did the Restore complete? If not try it again.

If the Restore completed and when you boot the machine all you are getting is a black screen with a blink cursor try the steps below:

Run the Check Disk Utility.

My acer netbook (winxp) won't load after the mouse cursor appeared

Sounds like you need to run the check disk utiltity but since you don't have a CD Drive, you're up the creek without a paddle. try booting up into Safe Mode and if you get there successfully reboot and see if the normal mode works, if not you can uninstall Microsoft Security Essential in Safe mode. Or you can use System Restore to restore back to a point (date and time) when the system was working ok. Click Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore and select a restore point before you loaded Security Essentials. In Windows 7 just click Start then type System Restore in the search box above the start then look at the returned results and click System Restore.

System Restore does not lose any of your data, documents, music, pictures, videos or programs (unless the programs was installed after the date and time you selected).

To get into safe mode follow the steps below:

Turn off the computer, then hit the power button to turn it back on and immediately start hitting the F8 key repeatedly until you see SAFE MODE. Take the Safe Mode option and let it boot up. Safe Mode will look different to you, the screen will be darker and the icons bigger, this is normal.

You can try to get to a dos command prompt or you can see if the system will allow you to boot in Safe Mode to get to the dos command prompt.

I am sick of my Toshiba Satellite computer crashing several times a day. It does not appear to be software related.

Hi

Try to run SCAN DISC for automatically fixing errors.

Or try this solution

Go to START
Choose ACCESSORIES
Right click on DOS command prompt and choose RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR ( if ask for password put the password)
The type SFC /SCANNOW and press enter.

If does not help you, I suggest you reformat your operating system. But make sure you have the Hardware device installer CD, Operating system installer CD and a back up storage device to back up your files.

Here is on how to reinstall your operating system.

No operating system

Let the install disc for Windows or whatever OS you want to install reformat the drive. When asked, just delete the partition and then recreate it (everything will be gone). Otherwise you need to use a Startup disc.

DOS for gateway laptop model ML6720

Hi,

Pls try to download boot98se.exe and thereafter it will automatically install itself to a blank diskette. That would then be bootable and usable as a DOS boot disk. If you are running some other Operating System, this page may help you with making a bootable DOS disk.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.
