Auto Detect or MSC

Is there a better one to choose bc before I had the problem of not being able to view some of the songs that were in my mp3 player which initially was on MSC. Then I switched to Auto Detect and was able to delete the songs I decided not to put on the player. Whats the difference between the two

Re: Auto Detect or MSC

I'm not sure what the REAL difference is, but I have some info that might help "Auto Detect" can also be called MTP which stands for MEDIA TRANSPORT PROTOCOL. Also, MSC stands for MEDIA STORAGE CLASS. Hope you can figure out something from this :)

I got a problem with my mp3

Transfers onto the m240 can be done in 2 USB connection modes:
MTP mode: Media Transfer Protocol using software, e.g. Windows Media Player 10 or higher.
MSC mode: Mass Storage Class using Windows Explorer, looking in "My Computer" viewing the player as a removable disk.

Typically, songs put onto the player in MSC mode can not be viewed in MTP mode and the other way around.

Switching to MSC mode in the player's menu:
Look in the player under Settings Menus > USB > select MSC for using the "copy and paste" or "drag and drop" method for transfers in "My Computer".
When Auto Detect is selected, it depends on the configuration of the computer, what setup for priority has been installed.

Forcing the player into MSC mode:
1. Turn device OFF.
2. Facing the hold switch slide it to the right so an orange color would show putting the device on Hold.
3. Connect the device to the PC.

Sync songs don't show on my player

It says in the user manual for C-100 sansa player that "various software packages are available to syncrhonize your songs on your device. Please refer to the specific software package instructions. "

I used Windows Media Player 9 and when you use these older Media Players you must remember to change your USB setting on your Sansa player to MSC. Turn on your Sansa Player, Choose the Main Menu and select settings. Don't choose auto-detect, but select MSC. If you choose auto-detect it will default to a setting called "MTP", and MTP wants Windows Media Player 10 to download your stuff.

I'm not familiar with how ITunes works, but perhaps AUTODETECT will work to synchronize your files.

Good luck.

My computer and sansa mp3 player

The older C-100 required you to change your settings on your main menu.
Main Menu
Auto Detect or MSC comes up
If you have Windows Media Player 10, choose auto-detect.
If yo uhave Window Media Player 9 or earlier, choose MSC. Happy listening.
(You probably just forget about that little settings change on your old one).
I'm not sure if the M-200 has the same settings thing, but hopefully it does, cause that's the only solution I have for today!

I can't delete songs from my Mp3.

I had the same problem.

On the MP3, go setting and then to USB.

There are two options: Auto Detect or MSC. One will be checked showing the current connection type. Select the other one and connect the Sansa to your computer.

For some reason, the Sansa doesn't recognize files loaded in MSC if you're connected in Auto mode and vis versa.

In MSC mode, it will show up as a devise with a drive letter. In Auto mode, there's no drive letter; it shows up as a removable devise.

Also note, you can only add Playlists in the Auto mode. MSC mode does not recognize Playlists or if it does, I haven't figured out how to do it

I have a new sansa mp-3 can't put CD on

Copy your cd into your Media Player first.
Once it is in your library, you should be able to send it to your player by right clicking on the songs in your libary (using Windows Media Player 9).
Make sure you choose correct USB settings.
On my C-100, I have to go to Main Menu of my sansa player, choose Settings.
You might see auto detect or MSC.
Choose MSC for Windows Media Player 9.
Choose Auto detect for Windows Media Player 10.
You can also go to and download a manual for your player.

Sansa c 240... how do i download media converter?

You don't need to Get the Sansa Media Converter to Transfer song on your player. the Sansa Media Converter is used to transfer photos and videos on the Sansa.and to transfer song on the Player this is what you need to know.

the Sansa has two modes wherein it may connect to the computer, the MSC (Mass Storage Class) mode and the MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) mode. If you are transferring un-licensed, non-protected songs, you may transfer them using the MSC mode by simply copying them on to the Sansa. This mode also allows you to use the player with Audible files. If you are transferring music that you have purchased or music that are licensed and/or proctected, you would need to use the MTP mode. To transfer these files, you would need to use Windows Media Player 10 or some other Music Softwares such as Rhapsody and Napster.

If you add songs to the player in one mode, then switch to the other mode, you will not be able to see the songs from the previous mode, though the space used on the player will still reflect their presence. If you cannot see your songs on your PC in one mode, please try viewing them in the other. In order to change the USB mode of the player, you must power the player on and go to "Settings." Under "Settings," there should be a "USB" option. It would then give you the choice to change it from "Auto Detect" (MTP which is also known as Playforsure in other Sansa) to "MSC (Also known as Rhapsody in other Sansa)."

To add songs using the MSC mode, follow these steps:

1. Organize your songs into folders and place it into one directory.
2. Open "My Computer" and open the "Sansa C240" drive for your Sansa.
3. If you see 3-4 Folder there, click on Tools choose File Opdtion, there will be a Pop-up screen and choose View Tab
4. Select on Show Hidden files and Folder Option, so you can see all the files
5. Choose MUSIC Folder, double click and Drag and drop all the songs on that folder, and It will go automatically on your player. OR highlight a songs, right click select COPY, go to MUSIC folder right click then PASTE and it will be save on your Player

If you still need the media converter...go to to download there software and go to this website...

Need help

If you change USB protocols to MSC, it won't let you view the songs you put on using the Auto-Detect protocol, in my experience, and you can't switch back protocols. Reformatting by going into my computer, right clicking your sansa device, and then going to format seems to be the only way to get rid of these invisible songs, and you won't be able to select which ones. It gets rid of all of them, but at least they're gone.
