Stuck in suspend/sleep/standby... I think...

I just bought this used notebook from a guy who had just upgraded it to XP SP1, and it worked fine. I updated it to SP2, then I had to go to work, and when I came back to it later, the notebook would turn on (charge and power lights come on, and you can hear the HDD spinning) but the Display doesn't come on, the CD drive won't open, etc. It's all-around unresponsive. I've tried the "FN" + "Suspend" keys, I've tried the power button, but nothing seems to work. Any help would be great.

Take the battery out for a minute and put it back in. Don't plug the AC adapter in. Now turn it on. If it comes on go to 'settings' 'control panel' 'power settings' set everything to 'never' and make sure nothing is checked under the differant tabs. Ray

Compaq q1859 monitor

Hmmm, sleep/suspend mode is only supposed to happen when it doesn't sense any movement from the mouse, it also shouldn't suspend if you are in full-screen either. So if you are playing a game that shouldn't happen at all... as a test you should put the "turn off the display" to "never" and see if it still happens.
I have this happen when watching Netflix, if I don't move the mouse my TV will go into suspend mode, even though I am in full screen... I think my issue however is related to the fact that I am using HDMI to connect to my TV from my computer... I have not solved this issue yet!

I have a Sony Z11 and lately when it is in sleep mode or idle for a while it will shut down in such a way that I have to reboot and when I do it gives the standard Windows 7 message about it not shutting...

Hi,

Have you checked the sleep mode time under Settings ?
This is a known behaviour with sony laptop's and there are several workaround. The best i can suggest is to update the SP 2, since this issue started with SP1. Also check if any Pen drive, flash drive is connected when it goes to sleep mode, try removing any such removable device and check if that fixes the problem.

I have a 54g MaxPerformance 802.11g adapter which came with my compaq presario. My wireless network worked with WEP but won't with this computer using WPA2. I think I need to update the driver. Which one...

I do not believe that updating the driver for your network card will solve the problem, although you should always install the newest one for best operation. You can go to Compaq's support page here and see if there is an update available for your model.

If WEP worked for you and WPA doesn't, then it is an encryption problem. Encryption happens on a different layer than the driver, which simply makes your Operating System work with your hardware.

If you are running Windows XP SP1 or SP2, update the operating system to XP Service Pack 3 for best WPA/WPA2 support.

XP Service Pack 1 computers do not support WPA by default and cannot support WPA2. To upgrade an XP SP1 computer to support WPA (but not WPA2), either
  • install the "Windows XP Support Patch for Wi-Fi Protected Access" (link) from Microsoft, or
  • upgrade the computer to XP SP2
XP Service Pack 2 computers by default support WPA but not WPA2. To upgrade an XP SP2 computer to also support WPA2, install the "Wireless Client Update for Windows XP SP2" (link) from Microsoft.

If you have any more questions, just come back here and leave a comment - I'm happy to help.

XP-Pro Crash

I don't know why but some systems which have XP (SP1 or SP2) simply can't take the upgrade to SP3. Your system appears to be one of them. For instance our family's computer had XP SP2 and upon upgrading to SP3 we received a fatal crash while XP was loading into normal operating mode.

I managed to resolve the issue by booting to safe mode and restoring the system to a date before I installed SP3. Sorry that the new SP doesn't work for you.

Not turning back on after sleep mode

I had the same problem when I first bought my Acer Aspire One a few weeks ago. I searched the web for answers, but it didn't really seem like anyone had a solution. However, one guy on a forum or website said something that gave me an idea - he said something like: What's the problem? Just open it up, hit the power button, type your password, and it wakes up.

Well, that didn't seem helpful to me at the time that I read it, but after thinking about it, I had a hunch. I had not set up my netbook to have a password (yet). So I did. And it's been waking up from sleep mode like it should ever since!!!

Hopefully, if you're reading this, setting a password will work for you, too. If you don't know how to set a password, here goes... Start...Control Panel...User Accounts...Change an Account...[Pick your name.account]...then the option to create a password should come up. Let us know if this works for you!

Myself can't install win_xp sp-2in my pc

THE INSTALLATION OF WINDOW SERVICE PARK GOES LIKE THIS. IF YOU ARE USING WINDOW XP WITH SP1 THEN YOU CAN UPGRADE IT WITH SP2. IF YOU ARE USING WIN2000 FOR INSTANCE YOU CAN NOT IINSTALL SP1 OR 2 OF WIN XP ON YOU OS YOU MOST FIND SERVICE PARK FOR WIN2000 TO UPGRADE AND IT ALSO HAS TO START FROM 1 TO THE LATEST VALUE THAT IF YOUR WINDOW2000 HAS SP1 YOU WILL START WITH 2 YOU CAN JUNP TO SP3 OR 4.
