Question about HP Photosmart C4580 All-in-One InkJet Printer

1 Answer

HP C4580 won't go online

I have a laptop that's wireless and I've successfully connected my new HP C4580 printer to it wireless as well. But the problem is I can't get the printer to go on-line at all. I've tried everything but nothing works. I can print things from my desktop just fine so I know the printer is working. On the drop down menu of options there isn't even an online choice, there's only the offline. Please help.

Hi Dante, thanks for your quick response! I can't print anything from the internet, which is what I want to do.

  • nadine519 Jan 17, 2009

No, no, they are both in my home. I have to use them both in the dining room and I wanted wireless to do away with the cable mess. Sure, I could use the USB cable and it might work, but what's the point of buying a wirelss printer if you're going to use the cable? I'm trying to keep the area neat and tidy and cable free.

Sorry, maybe I don't explain myself very well. I would like the printer to print from the internet, postage labels for example from the site. But I can't get the printer to go on-line to interact with the internet. It continues to be off-line (meaning it is not seeing the internet from my laptop). I hope this is more clear!

  • nadine519 Jan 17, 2009

No, it is pending where it will stay pending forever because the printer is off-line and can't see the internet. Thanks anyway.

Sorry I had to run out Dante, errands to do.

This laptop is connected on a netgear wirless router, therefore it is wireless. I use DSL. I guess using the word 'online' was incorrect.

I suppose 'ready' is the correct word, so I cannot get the printer to be ready, it just stays offline. And now to add to my woes, I can no longer print anything from my desktop. :( Last night I plugged in the usb cable to print something, and it wanted me to reinstall the printer, but since it was already installed I got an error. I think I'm just going to uninstall the printer and try again, I can't even get a print test now!. Thanks again for your help, I'll check in tomorrow and let you know what I did and how it worked.

    Dear Dante,

I fixed it!!! :) While installing I followed the instructions to let HP install everything so not to block anything. But still I think some things were blocked because when I looked at my firewall 'exceptions' a few of the .exe files were not included (according to my basics guide manual that came with the printer). So I added them and also the suggested port to my allowed ports. I then deleted the printer and just added back on (drivers and eveything else needed remained) and it came up 'Ready'!!! I've been happily printing. Hope pc and printer remember their settings when I shut them down tonight! I guess when all else fails, read the manual more thouroughly. Thanks for your patience and help!

Thanks Dante for the link, you just never know! You were very helpful, you got me to thinking things through, one step at a time and I did it! :)

    Warm regards,

I have the samr problem as Nadine. The printer is offline and I don't know how to get on line or ready. Please help

Printer works at times and does not. Showing off line and fixes given by HP do not fix the problem.

Do you mean, you can't print from a different location - let's say - an internet cafe to your printer at home?

    Hi Nadine,

what do you mean by "going online"?

Apart from printing, what would you like to do?

Thank you Nadine,

yes - the plot is thickening now!

To your problem:
The printer itself will never go online. If you want to print something from the internet (a web page i.e.), your computer is establishing that connection via a web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.), like the page you see right now.
If you want to print something, you have to choose the "Print" command form the "File" menu in your application or hit the "Ctrl" key and "P" at the same time.

In the upcoming dialog you can choose your printer and the printing preferences. Try it right now and print this page. (Make sure you select "1 to 1" in the "Print Range" options, otherwise you might end up with a lot of scratch paper...)

Did it work?

If so - any other questions?
If not, post a comment and tell me what happened.

Sorry Nadine, but I am not willing to give up that easily ;-)

Maybe I didn't make myself clear. Your printer is only printing what you see on your computer. Nothing else. It is not going out to the internet or something. Your computer does and then sends the print command to the printer.

    So: (if you like...)

How is your computer connected to the internet? Do you have a router or modem? Is your computer connected wireless or with a cable? Do you use DSL, Cable or Dial-up?

    Dear Nadine,

image me banging my head on the table...a Windows firewall issue!!!
    I can't believe it...
I was really keen to solve the problem, but I'm happy that you fixed it.
The settings will not change after a shutdown, but just in case you might need it, here is the link to HP, where you can download the user manual. Might come in handy sometime...;-)

I wish I would have been more help, but I'm glad it works.

Trying to link my acer laptop to my hp c4580 printer. dont know my SSID number. Help!

I'm assuming you're trying to do this wirelessly?  The SSID is what your wireless router calls itself.  You can find what this is by clicking on the wifi icon near the clock on your computer and seeing which one you're connected to.  I can't give exact instructions, because you didn't say what operating system you're on; but just click on the wifi and it'll tell you in one of the options.
Please rate me if you found this helpful, thanks.

We have a hp c4580 wireless printer and we are having problems with getting it to work. Can you please advice what to do. Bethany

Basically, you need to configure the HP C4580 printer with the same wireless settings of your network. Thus, you need to get the following information from your wireless router:

SSID or wireless network name
Type of Wireless Security
Wireless Security key/passphrase/password

To set those settings on the printer itself, you need to temporarily connect first your printer to the computer through USB. Then run the HP Printer Setup CD. It'll ask for you to install the required software then it'll ask for you to configure the printer on a wireless network. From then on, you will need to input the wireless settings that you got from your router.

I don't have a solution for this problem. I have a comment. I have the same types of issues with my HP. I hate HP. Why is it that we can design software to remotely fly fighter jets but we can't get reliable software to print wirelessly? I am now going to throw my HP Photosmart C4580 All-in-One in the road.

A wireless printer generally needs to be set up via a USB connection, first. Then, the connection needs to be configured for wireless.

Hope this helps.

My HP Photosmart C4580 wireless printer will print when the computer is plugged into the printer. However when disconnected it will not print and will say that the printer is offline. How do I make it...

you gotta go into the printers folder in control panel and and right click on you printer icon and then select use printer online ,just to check if you printer has been connected wirelessly properly or not insert the cd and click on add a device and then try to install your printer in the wireless network if you printer is detected then install it and complete the installation ,it means that your printer was not installed but only configured to work on the wireless network thats why you keep getting the printer offline

I don't know if you had your problen fixed, but I just bought this printer this week and was having problems setting it up with the instructions. I finally decided that I would just set it up to my laptop with the USB cable attached. The software that came with the printer was already in my computer. We'll the computer started up the software, It fully installed it, step by step. Now I have a wireless connection with the printer on all 3 of the laptops in the house. Just put the USB on your computer and on the printer. Make sure the software is installed and it will walk you through the installation. Install this way on all of your laptops. I'm so happy that I finally can print wirelessly without using the goofy instruction booklet. Good luck, hope this helps some one else.
