Olympus fl-50 powers up but flash does not fire / work

Hello, need some help with this one.
the flash was set on auto, and used with an e-300. it was working fine and out of the blue the flash stopped firing. the display is on, pushing the ''TEST/CHARGE'' button gives not response except one of the LED's on the quantum battery, the last one from the end, dims slightly as the TEST button is pushed. the green light that comes on or blinks while recharging between flashes is not anymore.
If I were to guess: the energy to fire the flash is not releases for some reason, so recharging is not happening.
I reset the unit, still, powers up, display is on, have access to controls, the amber ready light is on, the auto check light does not come on at any point now, mode, zoom, control dials, and light button are functional.
It's out of warranty.
what could have gone wrong?
how can it be fixed?
can I fix it myself?
any instructions on how to open this unit?
other approach:
who can fix it? and how much does it cost?

I need my flash, please help.

I too was having the same problem. After trying several different things, I decided to replace the batteries. Eventhough the old ones would power it up and all looked normal, I'm guessing they just didn't have enough "umpf" to get the flash to fire. With the fresh batteries, it seems to fire consistantly every time I release the shutter now.

I have my fingers and toes crosse that this takes care of it.

Try this and let us all know....

I have the same problem, I have looked every where even on the Olympus site and have no luck finding anything, I paid £280 pounds for this unit and have hardly used it. Took it to a few repair center's & they reckon £200 pounds to repair it (how can that be) I only want it repaired and am sure it is the bulb I don't want to buy a new one this could happen again at great cost to me. I have to say I am not very happy with Olympus at all, bad service, & lack of help with this problem.

How can I turn down the power on the FL50 to get more flashes. Can you turn down the power on the camera E510 with hte FL50 attatched?

the user manual is here http://www.olympus.co.jp/en/support/imsg/digicamera/download/manual/accessories/man_fl50_e.pdf
Have a look at page 46 TTL Auto mode - you can adjust the variable between power setting - + or - 3 stops Page 48 gives full details on adjusting this setting
Light intensity adjustment
  • The flash light intensity can be adjusted between +3 and –3.
  • The light intensity adjustment must be set to ON in the custom setup operation (page 61). • The indicator appears in the control panel.
  1. Turn dial B to select a light intensity adjustment value in the following steps. (This selection is also possible with dial A.)
  • 0 → +0.3 → +0.7→ +1.0 ... +3.0
  • 0 → –0.3 → –0.7→ –1.0 ... –3.0
  1. The display shows the light intensity adjustment value except when the value is 0, in which case the display does not show the light control range.
  2. If the camera’s flash adjustment mode is selected, the actual flash light intensity will be the total of the light intensity adjustment value set on the FL-50 and that set on the camera. The light intensity adjustment value displayed is that of the FL-50 only.

Non-syncing Olympus FL-36

Hey I have an E510 and an fl 36 flash unit and no problems for a year now.
And no problems at all {knock wood]!
Have you checked to see if all the flash pins are making contact?
Normally I only turn my flash on after I put it on the camera and then turn the camera off and then on again to see if everything is ok. I remember the flash would not communicate with the camera on a shoot and after a while I realized that the flash was not all the way in the hot shoe. Fool around with the flash off the camera first and see the flash have modes that you have to set up if the mode is set in full manual that might be a problem. There is a button that you have to hold down for three seconds to get in the menu. My buttons are fine and have not faded any at all. I realize that the power button an the flash is hard to press on, I do hope I was of help .GOOD LUCK

this is when the camera doesn't have enough light for auto focus! to suppress it, disable the option "auto pop-up" in the settings menu of the camera. you then might risk unsharp images but strobing won't happen until you manually pop-up the built in flash.

to get rid of the whole thing, you can buy one of the olympus e-system external flashes like fl-36 or fl-50. these bring a red-light for auto focus assistance.

Built-in flash and an external flash simultaneously

Yes, please see the following table: Optional Flash Flash Control Mode Capacity FL-50 TTL Auto (Super FP flash)/ TTL Auto/ Auto/ Manual/ Manual (Super FP flash) The FL-50 flash can be connected with the E-300 camera through flash power grip: FP-1 and flash cable: FL-CB05. FL-40 Auto/ Manual The external flash cannot be used with the built-in flash. * Only Auto and Manual mode can be set in the concurrent use of FL-40 and the built-in flash. (For their specification design, E-300 and FL-40 can not communicate in TTL Auto and R-TTL Auto modes.) FL-36 TTL Auto (Super FP flash)/ TTL Auto/ Auto/ Manual/ Manual (Super FP flash) The external flash can be used with the built-in flash.

Settings that must be set before... the external flash feature

Yes, set the camera mode dial to P, A/S/M or any shooting mode except the movie mode. Turn on the extension flash unit's power then select the camera's flash mode. The flash mode button on the camera controls the built-in flash as well as the extension flash. Only the built-in flash and the Olympus FL-20/FL-40/FL-50 extension flash can use the red-eye reduction flash mode. All flash units can use the fill flash, flash off, and slow-sync flash modes.
