CPU heatsink/fans are usually sold as a unit at Newegg.com, tiger.com as well as al other computer supply places. Fan and heatsink are specific and  must match CPU and socket.

I just received a cooler master v6 yesterday and installed in my case. the instructions that came with it sucks! after the install im still left with a bag of goods that i honestly dont know if it was...

On the mother board there are plugins that are used for fan only and nothing else. They are usually located next to the CPU three prong pin inserts. They are programmed to receive information that also includes the thermo read a well you have to have a 3 wire fan setup one to power the fan and the other to read the CPU and fan Temp as well as the speed of the fan. If the fan is not a three wire fan your computer will go on the bleak and will not be able to read the Thermo or the speed configurations.
It is imperative to place the fan in the proper portion of the mother board with the three wire connection in order. In some cases you have to reset the BIOS to be able to read the new fan configurations. Also with this said since you have mentioned that the fan will not spin at all and the other ones do you may have a defective fan. Not sure where you got this but if it will not spin do not install this fan. Check the wiring and also on the mother board it will say CPU fan only or Fan or Fan for CPU make sure that you have the right fan slot. If all else fails you can strip just the rubber on the wires and wiring them together not recommended to get the fan to work for you if you are insistent on using this new fan. If it works from wiring them together you may get a reading on the BOOT fan failure.
Get a fan that works for your board configuration and one that you know works before installing a new fan. This is all I can tell you without seeing the computer itself. Thanks for using FixYa! John

I don't know technical terms but there is a 4screw x that holds the sink to the mother board just to the right of the x is a small square over a chip is the square super to have a pad on it or no pad and...

Let me see if I can decipher what you have stated killa_klowns, and offer a solution.

1) The Processor has a Heatsink on it, or a Heatsink/Fan combo. Depends on what the computer manufacturer designer wanted to implement.

{Some computers have a Heatsink/Fan combo sitting on the Processor.
Other computers just have a Heatsink sitting on the Processor, and air is provided by a Front computer case fan pushing air through a plastic cover onto the Heatsink}

Typical design for a Heatsink/Fan combo (Stock design. LGA 775 processor socket. Also, not a gamer type of rig),

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5205492&CatId=493

Photos showing typical Intel Pentium 4 processors. Shows the top of the Processor's case that the Heatsink sits on,

Where the headings state > Specifications - Pictures (5) - CPU ID (1) - Comments (15),

Thermal Paste should be used on the top of a Processor's case.
If there is a Thermal Pad, take it off, and fly it at the cat.
They're JUNK!

[ Always Thoroughly clean the top of a Processor's case, and the bottom of the Heatsink, before applying fresh new Thermal Paste. Same thing for every chipset.

> Observe Anti-Static Precautions A Processor is the most susceptible hardware component to Static shock.

Use a plastic scraper to clean the top of the Processor's case, and the bottom of the Heatsink.
I use an old credit card.

Then use Q-tips dipped in Isopropyl Alcohol (Rubbing alcohol) to clean the top of the Processor's case, and the bottom of the Heatsink.
May take several Q-tips dipped in alcohol. Usually a gooey mess.

CAUTION!!
Isopropyl Alcohol is EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE!
Use in a Well ventilated area with No sparks or flames present ]

The next chipset in line to use a Heatsink is a Northbridge chipset.
Termed Northbridge, for one, because in relation to how it is sitting on the motherboard, it is to the North of the motherboard.

On the motherboard the Northridge chip sits below the Processor.

The Northbridge chip may, or may Not have clips which hold the Heatsink on.
When no clips are used, > Thermal Glue is used to hold the Heatsink on.

{The motherboard chipset is the Northbridge chip, and the Southbridge chip.
Note* This info does Not apply to motherboards that support the Intel Core i3, i5, i7, or i9 processors}

The Super I/O chipset does Not use a heatsink.

Tell me what the motherboard manufacturer name, and Model Number is, and I can give you more detailed info about that motherboard.

Need new heatsink compatible with foxconn nbt-cmi284bx-c

That's not an honest question; are you somehow going to use both the new heatsink and the old one together, so they have to be compatible?  Since you're not, I suggest looking for heatsinks compatible with P4 on a shopping or trade site, which totally have you covered.  There's nothing to fix here.

That system is a little old though.  For your electricity dollar and your time, you will get more use out of a nice 6-core CPU, DDR3, etc.  Bon chance.

How do i quiet this fan down? 478

What do you mean by Quiet it down? If the fan is running at an excessive speed, try to look in the Bios (Hardware monitor) settings to set the CPU fan to auto. This will provide a balance between fan speed and cooling.

If the fan itself is mechanically noisy, then you are probably looking at a shot bearing, causing it to run noisily. For the cost of a new heatsink and fan (about £20.00), its worth considering replacing it

Dell optiplex gx270 shuts down when cpu setting is on normal but runs when on compatible mode

The GX270 has a manufacturers defect with the motherboard. Open up the case and look at the capacitors, they look like a bunch of upsidedown double AA batteries sticking out of the board. The capacitors on the GX270 are bad if you see a crust on them or some kind of brown liquid, DO NOT TOUCH this it is battery acid.

Foxconn CPU fan making noise

It sounds like the fan bearing is shot, I'd recomend not using the computer until fan is replaced.
yes it is possible to replace the fan, i would recomend that you replace it with an aftermarket cooler. all you need is what kind of CPU you have, then find out what kind of socket it is, from there you can find the cooler you would like.

Secure heatsink to cpu

I see why you are here. The website s#@.
It looks like you would remove the on board square and replace it with this because it appeared to snap in. Push down to install. Try not to remove anything if you have 4 holes in your board. What board and processor do you have?

Rate this as a fixya if it fixes your problem.
