How can I do a system restore when I can't boot windows?

  • dianediane32 Jan 18, 2009

I tried the safe mode and was still prompted for the user and when I click the user it logs me off before I go to the desktop.
I can get to dos. Is there a way I can delete or edit the user file so
it goes right to windows without a user prompt?

You won't lose your data with System Restore. Just applications and and Windows Updates since the date you went back too. But you can save the current state with System Restore first. That way you don't have to worry about losing anything. Then go back with System Restore.

Can you get into Safe Mode by pressing the F8 key repeatedly (or hold down the CTRL key) just when Windows starts to load? If so, that will work.

Remember that menu where you can select safe mode? Well lower in that menu you can select last known good configeration. Try that one. Hopefully it will reset you back before this problem.

HOW DO RESET A DELL LAPTOP BACK TO FACTORY SETTINGS IF WINDOWS WILL NOT OPEN

You can restore your system by holding down the Ctrl key while tapping
the F11 key as soon as your start up your system.

IF your recovery partition is in tact (a hidden partition that has windows and all device drivers for THAT model of laptop), this will reinstall windows.

Also, this will reformat and delete all user files off your system, so if you feel brave you may want to boot with a Live LINUX cd to see if you can save any files to a flash drive or DVD.

After completing the process we can logon to the system with new user account that we create and we can retrieve data from old user profile.
Here is the process to run Imagex:
1. Boot to the computer using VISTA DVD.

5. Type Path d:\windows;d:\windows\system32 and press Enter
6. Go to Tools folder using command "cd tools".
7. Use this command Imagex /apply d:\dell\image\factory.wim 1 c:\
This process will take 15 Minutes after that reboot the system. After rebboting we will get OOBE Screen.
We can logon to the system using new username. We can retrieve the data by navigating to old user profile.
How to retrieve the data from the old user profile after using the Imagex procedure :
1. Click Computer
2. Click Local Disk C:
3. Locate Windows.old and double click on the same
4. Click Users
5. Click <username>
Note : <username> would be the login name for which he has forgotten the password

Cannot login

Actually windows save default configuration in WINDOWS\repair directory and current configuration in WINDOWS\system32\config directory, so by replacing file in  WINDOWS\system32\config with file in WINDOWS\repair directory you restore windows configuration to first finish installation state with no user, driver installed and software installed, but your file, user folder, and installed program still exist but will not work and you will not lose your data.

If your laptop support booting from USB try portable Windows XP Live USB

if not, use NTFS DOS
