Dryer drum will not turn

I have a Whirlpool dryer that is 4 years old. The drum will not turn. Is this something that is common that I can fix or do I need to call a service technician?

The problem could be a faulty motor or a displaced drum belt or an internal wiring problem.Calling the tech would be preferred. But in case you want to locate the problem by yourself, post the model number here and I can help you out with few internal diagrams.Good luck,Please do rate my answer and post comments.

Is there anything caught between the dryer drum and any housing. Can you hear it when the drum is turned by hand.

We have a 10 year old Whirlpool Dryer Model #LGB6200KQ0 drum is turning but no heat. Could you please advise?

Hi,

If you are having problems with your gas dryer not heating the most common problem is that the ignitor goes bad. Even though it glows sometimes it is still not working properly.

if you dryer is gas check out this gas no heat tip....

If you have an electric dryer, you can have many different things that can go wrong causing the dryer not to heat.

check out this electric no heat tip...

Not spinning however has heat

It usually happen when the motor goes bad. If the appliance is more than 4 years old, you may need to request service to replace the main dryer motor. If the dryer is not that old, perhaps something is jamming the mechanism. The dryer needs to be opened to check if there is nothing (perhaps clothes) jamming the drum.

If you are trying to do it by yourself, UNPLUG all before removing any cover.

It sounds like the heating filament below the drum has either fried one of the fuses down there, or has some lint or something fallen on to it.
Did you notice if the drum still heated up? If it did, then its a bit trickier to completely ID what went wrong. If it no longer heats up now, then the thermal cut-off fuse has been blown and will need to be replaced (most common problem with a dryer)
Typically, once it is unplugged, you can open up the panel below the door (there are normally a couple of latches along the top gap that you need to push in with a couple of screwdrivers to open). Once open, you should see a heating coil that provides the hot air to the drum, look to see if there is anything in contact with the coil. If there is something there, remove it. If not, then continue below.
Now, if your dryer has stopped heating up, you need to pull the coil and replace the thermal cut-off fuse (or get someone in to do it for you). If it was still heating up, you can start the dryer with the panel open (make sure everyone and everything is well clear of the opening) and see where it is smoking from.

Eleven year old Whirlpool electric dryer cannot turn the drum with a full load of towels. The motor turns on but then shuts off. It will turn a very light load.

Turn the drum by hand. It should rotate fairly easy in one direction. If so, then the motor is going out and need replacement. Fairly common problem.
