On the back of the hardware are jumpers
mine are located next to where the ribbon plugs in
there are 3 jumpers- like this : : :
the jumper must be on "cable" ( printed above post )
just move the jumper and reinstall
Now xp can find the 10401
I did it...it works

Power on computer and enter the set up (BIOS) menu by tapping the F2 key. Hold down the <Alt> key and depress the <E> then the <F> keys in succession. This will force the motherboard to load default settings and also force the motherboard to redetect all IDE devices. Note: The selection for the floppy drive will be set to ON. If you do not have one then you must disable floppy in set up (BIOS) menu.

I have a HP External USB CD/DVD R/RW drive. Stopped working.

First, try a new USB cable. Two, try a different USB port (if using a hub, directly connect to the computer). Three, check if there are any updated drivers or firmware for the drive.

Cindy Wells
(also make sure that the external drive is self-powered that the cord is undamaged and the power isn't surging or going into a brown-out. If it is one of the new bus-powered DVD drives, make sure that the computer has a good power source (not on battery for a laptop).)

Hp 1040i xp problem

I'm not sure if this will help you but read this link I'm sending. I went round and round with 3 different highend motherboards and processors and kept getting error after error, everything I read in forums, the tech guys, everybody seemed to go to my memory as the problem but low and behold I wasn't believing them and my research paid off. Maybe the intel/hp problems I was having are related to yours. The acceleration software maybe. I dont know but you might want to give it go. I was a little shocked that my brand new dvd writer intel conflict would cause the blue screen of death. sorry so long but if this helps anyone I'll be glad. Thanks, great days to all, Dave http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00001705&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3422492&lang=en
