T42 is not starting

I'm no more able to start my T42 laptop, even if it's plugged in power. Is it possible that's because the battery is dead ?

The battery light is flashing orange, but the computer is still not starting. Do you think that this is a battery bproblem and that the problem could be resolved by bying a new battery ?

    Thanks for you help.

Try doing a manual system reset. To do this:
1. Remove battery and unplug AC adapter.
2. Press and HOLD power ON button for 30secs. at least
3. Put back the battery and plug back the AC adapter
4. Power ON the laptop as normal.

Your PC will not start if battery has not enough power, be sure to charge it several hours after manual reset.
Thinkpad battery are notorious for their shoddy battery life.
Check Lenovo tips for battery life here
But remember three things Li-Ion batteries do not like:

    1. - deep discharges, discharging to 0% gives about 300 cycles, discharging to 80% gives about 500 cycles (until the battery reaches half new capacity)

    2. - heat, if you're using the computer on mains consider removing the battery and storing somewhere cool

    3. - being stored, try and store batteries at around 40% charge, don't buy old batteries or ones to use later, they lose capacity with no use at all
Your system should be working even when battery removed.
If itsn't your AC supplier may be dead check both battery and AC PS on another PC before investing in a new battery : the culprit could be the PS.

My previously healthy Thinkpad T42, will not post.

Hi,
The Thinkpad T42 doesn't have a reset button on it like the older IBM's used to.

There could be a problem with the battery. With the machine turned off remove AC power and then the battery. Plug in AC power again and see if the laptop will boot without the battery.
If it boots let it load up as normal and then shut it down again, reinsert the battery and try to boot it up. If it boots fine, if not then there is a problem with the battery.

Please post back if you need anymore advice.

Good luck.

IBM Thinkpad T42. About 1hr ago went black-dead. When the power supply is plugged in there is no icon illuminated. No power reaching anything. Recently have had some fan-error warnings and have been...

Check power adapter’s DC plug that connects into the laptop power socket with a multi-meter, the voltage should be slightly higher than the voltage that is printed on the label on the bottom of the adapter. If the voltage is zero or way below the voltage that is printed on the label then the power adapter is faulty and needs to be replaced.
If the adapter is OK then connect it to the laptop and power it up, then look at the power/battery charging LED light and wriggle the power plug in the laptop's power socket. If the power/battery LED light flashes and in a certain position this LED light stays firm, then the power socket is either faulty or it has a dry solder joint where it is connected to the motherboard.
This can be repaired but it requires the laptop to be completely dismantled to get at this power socket and repair. If you cannot DIY then I suggest you get a quote first.

IBM t42 comes on, beeps twice and goes off, connected and battery

Yes it is the fan, get a can of compressed air and clean the air vents and the CPU fan with that, also i would check into the CMOS battery as it could be dead and needs replacing.
As the laptop starts up hit F1 when you see the IBM logo and check the date and time, that will be a clear indicator IF the CMOS battery is dead because it will not be the right date and time, it should however let you into windows if you put the date and time right (it may take a couple of attempts)

Good luck

My T42 suddenly wont recharge the battery or wrk off mainsadapter

If the Laptop wont work off the power adepter, it also will not charge. The adepter could be bad (even if showing a power light) or the connector on the laptop could be broken. The best test is to take the battery out, attach the power adepter and try to start the computer if it starts, your battery is at fault. If nothing, suspect eh charger first. Be sure the pin on the Laptop power connector isn't bent or broken.

T42 Turns on for a split second then turns off.

OK. What you can do is to take out the battery then the HDD the plug in the unit and try to start it
If is doing the same thing definitely you got a bad SODIMM. If you have two of them try removing one and another to see which one is bad.
When you take out the HDD and memory remember to dismantle battery first and disconect the main.
This is the way to avoid damaging your memory and HDD

Shuts down autometically

Also, have you changed anything lately? and, Did this just start happening out of the blue, or did something happen to cause this, ie... power failure, kicked the plug out, ran the battery completely dead, overheated, etc...?
