Marciemarrcu,
Not sure what the entire message is about the bios. Did you add a drive to an older machine with scsi controller for scsi drives? The drive you may have installed (SATA) may not be compatible with the older interface, and the motherboard may not recognize the newer technology. You can still get scsi drives for older machines from places like newegg.com if you are looking to extend the life of an older server or workstation.

I have just tried, for the first time, using my new 320GB Canvio. The white pilot light comes on, and I feel the disk spinning for a short time, but there is no operating software presented, and no file...

External harddrives do not come with an O/S. They are for external storage, beyond the master harddrive you have installed.

The master harddrive has the O/S.
The Platters are spinning because BIOS had a look to see what is on the Toshiba 320GB external harddrive.

[You press the Power On button. The first chipset to receive power is the BIOS chipset.
(Basic Input/Output System)

BIOS looks to see what devices are connected to the computer, does a Ram Memory count, turns the Processor on, then hands the computer over to the operating system.

BIOS finds THE harddrive with the O/S on it ]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BIOS

http://computer.howstuffworks.com/hard-disk.htm

When the Windows O/S (Operating System) is installed on a computer is assigns hash values to certain major hardware components in the computer.

A) Processor
B) Harddrive
C) Motherboard. (Motherboard chipsets and BIOS software on the BIOS chipset)
D) Graphics chip. (Whether it is Integrated Graphics, {OnBoard}, or a graphics card)

Change any two of these hardware components and Windows throws up a 'red flag'.
Microsoft's User License states, "One genuine copy of Windows per One computer"

If a hash value has changed, such as there are different hardware components, Windows 'feels' it is being stolen.

Why do you feel there should be an O/S already installed on the external harddrive?
Awaiting your reply please state in a Comment.

My computer cannot recognise the hard drive

Are there any other harddrives installed on the computer...or is this a new harddrive...
If it's a second harddrive...then you have to set the jumpers accordingly...if it's a new harddrive...it should of came with a Cd and or floppy (depending on how old your computer is). You need to install that cd first, so it can tell your bios/cmos that there is a new HDD and the software will tell it to recognize it. Let me know

Cant install drivers

Read the manual that came with the harddrive - they usually mention setting your BIOS to properly install this type. Then check the BIOS to see if it has detected the harddrive. If it didn't, then you may have a cable issue.

hi ajmalnizar_n,

Try to check if your harddisk is detectable in Bios if so,
The problem is in the installation of windows xp. install a new copy

Cannot be detected by the computer

Good day,

For now I myself cannot give you a proper answer, but i can give a couple of options and/or rather a couple of tips on how can you make your computer detect your harddrive.

First i'd like you to provide the following:
1. Your computer specs.

Let's proceed to the tips:

1. Make sure the pin allocation is correct. ( You will find a 8 pins at the edge of your harddisk) This pins must be bonded together correctly for your computer to tell whether your harddisk is the master or the slave.
2. Check the IDE or SATA cable and see to it that it is properly connected to your hard disk and to your motherboard port.
3. Check the BIOS and see if the harddisk is enabled or not. At the side of the hard disk's name in BIOS you will see (well most of BIOS has this thingy) an option, this option is the detect option, click it and see if it does detect your harddisk.

If the tips above didn't work kindly update this post and kindly provide what i asked you to then we will fix you problem in no time.

Thank you and have a great day.

OK the only shot you got is to geta USB to SATA/IDE converter dongle, connect to another PC's USB port. Hopefully, you will be able to read it. Otherwise still plugged in you may be able to use recovery software and get you DATA back. Recover my files is one,

My boot screen shows secondary slave hard disk error press F1 to resume. if i press f1 it enters into bios setup and the i press esc discard changes logging into windows but secondary disk is not detected....

Check on harddrive you find jumper on it.
Then read on harddisk you can find there is specifiaction for master, slave and cable select jumper settings.
Put jumper as cable select then check.
Also reconnect sata or ide and power cable to harddisk.
Then check .
Let me know if you need more assistance.
Thanks.

We call them in the industry Death Stars! I have had several just die on me! If the drive does not show in the BIOS then you can't do a low level format! All the ones that have died on me have burnt out components on there circuit boards. Way to small for me to solder! So they were thrown away!
