You can try reinstalling the printer, as this apears to be a manufacturing defect.
Good Luck.

Without more details it's hard to say, have you checked the ink levels? Double-click the maint.4.1.29.jpg printer icon on your taskbar (in the lower right corner of your screen). You will see the Epson status window. You will see the six ink cartridge icons and their ink levels. Click the "Information button" for more details about the cartridges. Hope this is of some help.

Print Head Cleaning Cycle

Please confirm that the head cleanings were done using the most effective method listed below.

1. Make sure the printer is turned on but not printing.

NOTE: You cannot clean the print head if the any of the cartridges are expended. Replace the appropriate ink cartridge before proceeding.

2. Load letter size paper.

3. Click on START.

For Windows 95/98/ME: Click SETTINGS, PRINTERS, then right click on the EPSON STYLUS PRINTER ICON. Select PROPERTIES from the drop-down menu. Proceed to Step 4.

For Windows 2000: Click SETTINGS, PRINTERS, then right click on the EPSON STYLUS PRINTER ICON. Select PRINTING PREFERENCES from the drop-down menu. Proceed to Step 4.

For Windows XP: Click CONTROL PANEL, PRINTERS AND FAXES. Right click your EPSON STYLUS PRINTER ICON. Select PRINTING PREFERENCES from the drop-down menu. If this icon is not showing, select VIEW INSTALLED PRINTERS. Then right click the EPSON STYLUS PRINTER ICON. Select PRINTING PREFERENCES from the drop-down menu. Proceed to Step 4.

For Windows Vista: Click CONTROL PANEL, HARDWARE AND SOUND then PRINTERS. Note: these steps may vary depending on how Vista is setup. Right click on the EPSON STYLUS PRINTER ICON. Select PRINTING PREFERENCES from the drop-down menu. Proceed to Step 4.

4. Click on the UTILITY or MAINTENANCE tab, then click on HEAD CLEANING.

5. Follow the instructions on the screen to clean the print head. Cleaning takes about 30 seconds, during which time the printer makes some noise and the power light flashes. Never turn off the printer while the power light is flashing, unless the printer has not moved or made noise for more than 5 minutes.

6. When the power light stops flashing click PRINT NOZZLE CHECK PATTERN and then click NEXT.

7. If the nozzle check pattern has no gaps in its lines, click FINISH. If the pattern has any gaps, click CLEAN to clean the printhead again.

8. If the situation continues after three cleaning cycles and nozzle checks, replace one of the affected ink cartridge(s).

9. Once the cartridge(s) has been replaced, please follow steps one through seven up to three times.

If the nozzle check still has gaps after you have run at least 3 consecutive cleaning cycles and replaced the affected ink cartridge(s), your printer will require service.

***

Use the Printer Driver Utility to clean the print head. Alternatively, try this SSC Service Utility.
Also try changing the affected ink cartridge.
All else fails, your printer will require service.

My Epson Stylus CX5400 goes through the entire printing process, but what comes out of the machine is extremely faint and sparse - not readable at all. I've replaced all of the ink cartridges. What else...

1) Click on the printer icon and check to see if there is an ink saving feature on this printer.

2) The following link takes you to the nozzle check section of the FAQ's.
http://files.support.epson.com/htmldocs/cx54__/cx54__rf/wwhelp/wwhimpl/common/html/wwhelp.htm?context=EpsonHelp&file=problems.htm#wp999216

3)On Apple computers the wrong driver may be installed.:

function setViewedFAQCookie(oid, foid) { var viewedCookie = "EP_viewed_faqs" + oid; var viewed = cookie.Get(viewedCookie); var viewedS = new String((viewed == 'null') ? '' : viewed); var found = viewedS.indexOf("" + foid); if ( found == -1 ) { var newViewed = foid + ((viewedS == '') ? '' : (":" + viewedS)); cookie.Set(viewedCookie, newViewed, null, "/", ""); } } Q: Since I upgraded to Macintosh OS X 10.5 (Leopard), my printouts are faint. What should I do? A: Make sure you're not using the Macintosh OS X 10.5 Gutenprint driver. Follow these steps to check if you're using the Gutenprint driver and change it if necessary:
  1. From the Apple menu, select System Preferences.

  2. Click Print & Fax.

  3. If necessary, click once on your printer's name in the Printer list. (You don't need to do this if only one printer driver is installed).

  4. If you see Gutenprint next to your printer name, go to step 5 to change the driver. (The Epson Stylus Photo RX620 appears in the example below, but you'll see your printer or all-in-one name instead).

If you see only your printer's name, you're using the correct driver, and you can skip the remaining steps.

    drv_mac_398_er.gif

  5. Turn off the printer.

  6. Click the sw_mac_2_er.gif button to remove the printer from the Printers list, then click OK.

  7. Turn on the printer. Your computer should add the printer automatically.

If your computer does not add the printer or if it adds the Gutenprint driver again, contact Apple for assistance. You may need to reinstall the Epson drivers provided with Macintosh OS X 10.5.

Note: To check ink levels, click the Utility button, then click EPSON StatusMonitor. The Supply Levels button will not show remaining ink

Epson Stylus CX4800 All-In-One

One possible solution that we can advice is to do a complete trash & reinstallation of printer driver as well as the scanner driver.

For iMac with Leopard, there is a big possibility that the printer driver is not the correct epson series printer driver that's why you can't ink levels is unavailable. Just to set an expectation, printer driver for CX4800 is pre-installed as resident driver in Leopard. Please try to the following to solve that issue:

Determine Which Driver is Currently Being Used
1. Click on the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the Finder and open System Preferences.
2. In the System Preferences window, click on Print & Fax.
3. In the list of printers on the left side of the Print & Fax window, click once on your Epson printer to select it.
4. Check the name of the driver being used; it is displayed in the center of the Print & Fax window next to “Kind”.
5. If the driver name displayed next to “Kind” is Gutenprint, the incorrect driver is being used. Follow the steps in the next section to select the correct driver.

Selecting the Correct Driver
1. Turn off the printer.
2. Delete the print queue and remove the printer from Print & Fax by clicking on the minus (-) button under the list of printers. Click OK to confirm the removal.
3. Click on the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the Finder and open System Preferences.
4. In the System Preferences window, click on Print & Fax.
5. Turn on the printer. The system should add the printer automatically.
6. If the system does not add the printer or if it adds it using the Gutenprint driver, contact Apple for assistance. You may need to reinstall the Epson drivers provided with Leopard.

NOTE: To check ink levels, click the Utility button, then click EPSON StatusMonitor. The Supply Levels button will not show remaining ink levels for your Epson printer.
