Seagate has been the master of Hard Drives for along time. Most of the other manufacturers have sold out to other companies.

For the past four years an 80Gig (Gigabyte) hard drive was the norm, but in 2008 that changed and the price of a 180Gig or 250Gig drive is less than double the cost of a 80Gig drive.

Terrabyte drives will be the norm in three years, they're already selling in the Server industry as the norm.

How much to replace a hard drive . i only paid £150 second hand for my laptop. Is it wortb paying to have it repaired

probably
hard drives are around $40.00 aud and a replacement ( better option ) is a solid state (SSHD) hard drive
no discs no wearing parts and bigger capacity
for example a 120 gb sshd will handle what a 250 gb disc drive and will handle at a very much faster speed
I got a KINGSTON brand 120 gb sshd of the net for $90.00 aud
if you add and extra or bigger ram card to increase ram memory you will have a laptop equal to a new unit for around $750.00 aud
best advice --go talk with a reputable computer repair shop ( they sell all the bits ) and discuss repair against replacement with a new unit , then decide it you just want a serviceable lap top or a really big costly game machine
it all depends on what you want as an end result

HP Pavilion laptop - HDD issue?

very possible a hdd issue
you can get solid state hard drives ( far superior to disc hard drives) for around $90.00 for 125 gb
sshd drives have no moving parts , are much faster in start up and can get more data stored than a disc hard drive
KIngston brand are very reliable and can be got from the net--e-bay
Install one and use the os win 8 disc to install the os into the computer
if you don'y have a disc , you can install from the web and use the activation code you have for the disc
on installing the sshd, you will need to go into bios and change the boot from hhd to cd or external hard drive
that puts the os on to the new sshd and when that iscompleted you can then go back into bios and change to boot from external ( disc) to sshd

It looks like there's a 500GB drive out there for it, so I'm going to guess you can at least go to 500.

Take a look at this. They guarantee 100% compatibility it seems:

1. You can buy a bigger hdd and replace the existing
2. If your system has the ability for a second hdd, you can buy a new disk and install it as a second hdd.
3. You can compress the existing disk to put more thing in it.4. you can delete unnecessary files, uninstall useless softwares, serach for duplicate files and delete extra copies of them and increase the free space.

I have two identical Dell Inspiron 6000 that have had hard disc failure... each after the warranty expired.. is it worth replaceing hard drive, or should spend the money and time on new machine?

Hard drives are worth replacing. Its cheaper compaired to buying a new notebook. You can even choose a larger hdd according to your preference. I suggest you buy a seagate because it has a better quality and has 2 yrs. of warranty

I only have a 4 GB Hard Drive. I need more space.

Hello,

There will be more works to install an internal hard drive. You need to back up your data in the old drive, install the operating system in new drive, and copy back your data. I will think buying an external hard drive will be better options (or an usb hard drive enclosure and hard drive buying separately).

Dead hard drive, replacement not working

The solution is that you simply cannot go out and buy a replacement HD. You have to buy TOSHIBA's replacement HD.

They make a 40, 80, 160 and 320 GB HD for Tecra MV2's etc.- Other HDs simply will not detect.
