GE GSD2030 Dishwasher, Timer not advancing

I can turn the timer knob manually, but when we run the dishwasher it does not automatically advance. It will stay in the same position and run indefinately.

My guess is I need a new timer. Is this something I can fix my self? And if not, about how much to have it repaired by a professional?

Thanks,

Erin in Chicago

Not 2 weeks ago, I experienced the same problem. The timer does not advance. I'm looking at the parts schematic and wondering it is as simple as the timer spring or th timer cam itself. Don't want to spend too much money on it since the dishwasher is 10 years old. Currently considering if I should attempt to fix it or just buy another dishwasher.

SOURCE: Locked timer knob in GE Nautilus dishwasher

I ran into this problem earlierr today ....Check the float valve...it is a round looking device in the front (usually) of the DW...if this gets stuck it will (or may) get stuck in drain or in assist dry mode...push it up and down you should here a clicking noise. Take it out and see that there is no debris in it ...if so clean it ..and replace...then try the Dw.

I hopr this helped....good luck....thanks for rating my effort...The Fang.

Broken Timer? My OLD Kitchen Aid Quiet Scrub Dishwasher no longer advances through cycles automatically--I have to turn the knob manually for every step. It works fine other than that.

Hi Spring

All depends where you are and wether you can get Parts.
Is the timer accessible?
Timer is driven by a small clock motor.
Could it be fixed or lubricated.
Give it a service and save money!
Good luck

How do I get my ge dishwasher to run? the lights

Hello there and welcome to fixya
If electrical power is available to the dishwasher but the appliance doesn't run, the problem is likely to be a defective door switch, timer, or selector switch. Make sure to turn off the power to the dishwasher before attempting any repairs
To solve a door switch problem, you may be able to adjust the door latch's strike slightly, using a screwdriver
then make sure the door closes securly, if this doesent work
please check the timer as follows
Dishwasher timer concerns can be classified into two general categories: the timer cannot be advanced manually and appears to be stuck or intermittent automatic timer advancement.

1. The timer dial cannot be advanced manually and appears to be stuck. Stuck timers are generally caused by objects that prevent the detergent cup from opening, or by a sticky substance between the timer dial and the control panel.
  • Objects that prevent the detergent cup from opening: If your timer will not advance, open the dishwasher door and check for items that may be blocking the detergent cup.

    Also, check the detergent cup:

    • It should be fully closed at the start of a cycle.

    • It should be fully open at the end of the cycle.
    • Almost fully open between main wash and final rinse.

If it is in any other position, try to open or close the cup while at the same time rotating the timer. This should free it up. To prevent a reoccurrence, make sure nothing blocks operation of the detergent cup when the dishwasher door is closed and operating.

  • Sticky substances like orange juice that get between the timer knob and the front of the control panel on some models will bond the timer knob to the control panel. If you have this condition, it will be virtually impossible to rotate the timer knob while gently pressing the knob in toward the dishwasher. It will rotate normally if the knob is gently pulled away from the dishwasher while rotating the knob.

This problem can be solved by gently pulling the knob away from the control panel and cleaning behind the knob with a damp cloth. Do not use excessive force because the knob is attached to the control panel on models affected by this problem. If this operation cannot be performed, service should be contacted to repair the problem.
2. Intermittent automatic timer advancement. This can be described as the timer can be advanced manually, but it does not advance automatically in spots for up to 30 minutes.
  • This is almost always a normal condition and always occurs on models with a "Delay Start" feature.

Delay start timers increment or advance a couple of degrees once every minute or so during most of the cycle. However, during certain parts of the cycle they increment once every 30 minutes. This gives the dishwasher time to do the job of cleaning your dishes. The long increment times occur during "Delay Start", "Hot Start", "Normal Wash" and "Dry" cycles.

The timer will not move at all during these delay periods. This is normal operation and service is not needed. If you notice delay times substantially longer than 30 minutes, replace the timer
  • Also ensue that you are getting adequate water pressure and the unit is getting water inside and that the water is at the right temperature 140 is the min. for most units
  • Please check the above and let me know what you have found so i can continue to help there is a lot of things to check but these that i have provided are the most common thing that need to be checked first ok?
  • Best regards Mike

Kenmore Dishwasher 587.15163401 knob stuck mid-cycle

See if it is stuck on a water heat cycle. if the heater circuit or the thermostat is not working properly it will continue to run looking for a rise in temperature. If these are in working order the timer it self could be sticking and not advancing.

Dishwasher stalls

If the cycle doesn't complete, check these:

Water-heating cycle
Timer
Water-heating cycle Many dishwashers heat the wash and/or rinse water to a higher temperature, as the cycle calls for it. In these cycles, the dishwasher pauses after it has filled with water, waiting for the water to reach the pre-set temperature. What happens next, depends, as follows:

  • On some units, the pause is timed and the unit continues after the allotted time.

  • On others, the cycle can't continue until the water reaches the higher temperature. If you have this type of dishwasher and the water isn't being heated (say, because of a problem with the heating element or thermostat), after the unit stops at the heating cycle, it never continues. When you repair the heating-system problem, the "cycle problem" is fixed too.

Timer Timers don't often fail. But if every other part of the dishwasher seems to be working properly and the timer knob seems to be stuck in one place--doing one function continuously--the timer may be at fault. Dishwasher timers can't be repaired. If yours is defective, replace it.

If you can move the timer manually, then check the power to the timer motor. If you have power to the motor, replace the motor
